Prime video jumps prices, unveils ultra tier with 4k and more
Amazon is poised to raise prices for its Prime Video streaming service, effective April 10, 2026. The ad-free tier, rebranded as Prime Video Ultra, will see a price increase from $2.99 to $4.99 per month, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter. The move comes as Amazon expands the Ultra plan to include 4K/UHD streaming, five concurrent streams (up from three), and 100 downloadable titles (a jump from 25).

Amazon tightens grip on streaming premium
The upgrade also impacts the standard Prime Video plan, which will receive 50 downloads and four concurrent streams. This adjustment reflects a broader strategy by streaming giants to monetize their content libraries and cater to evolving consumer demands. The price hike positions Prime Video Ultra competitively against rivals like Netflix and Disney+, both of which offer premium streaming options.
The rebrand coincides with Prime Video’s recent foray into original series, including the recently released Young Sherlock. While the series has garnered mixed reviews – our own review gave it a 7/10, praising its “harmless fun with a clever spin on ‘Napoleon of Crime’ James Moriarty” – the platform is clearly investing in high-quality content to attract and retain subscribers. The recent live-action adaptation of God of War, however, has generated a more divisive initial reaction.
The shift in pricing and features underscores the ongoing battle for streaming supremacy. Amazon's strategy suggests a willingness to prioritize premium content and enhanced viewing experiences, even if it means a price increase for its loyal user base. The question remains: will viewers accept the cost of enhanced streaming, or will they seek alternatives?
