Rgg studio unveils ambitious new game, stranger than heaven
Game developer RGG Studio
has revealed its next major project, Stranger Than Heaven, a sprawling narrative that spans nearly a century. The game, announced originally at The Game Awards in 2024 under the codename Project Century, was rebranded with its final title last summer. In partnership with Xbox, RGG Studio showcased a 30-minute presentation packed with new gameplay footage and insights into the world and mechanics of Stranger Than Heaven.nStory and setting
nSet in the early 20th century, Stranger Than Heaven follows protagonist Makoto Daito as he flees his troubled past in San Francisco and boards a ship bound for Japan. There, he crosses paths with the notorious smuggler Orpheus, played by none other than Snoop Dogg. As Makoto becomes embroiled in a life of crime, his skills and knowledge of the Japanese language prove invaluable, paving the way for a rise to power in the underworld.
nHowever, Makoto's ambitions extend beyond the shadows. He becomes involved in the vibrant world of Japanese show business, leveraging his criminal connections to achieve success. Throughout the game, the player will experience this evolution firsthand, as the world of Stranger Than Heaven changes and grows with Makoto's journey.

Gameplay
nWhile sharing some DNA with RGG Studio's Yakuza series, Stranger Than Heaven offers a distinct approach to combat and exploration. The fighting system is more grounded and thoughtful, with players utilizing specific buttons for the left and right sides of Makoto's body and limbs. This forces a more strategic approach, as button-mashing is less effective.
nPlayers will also have access to a variety of melee weapons, which can be found, purchased, and upgraded. Gunplay appears to be a part of the mix as well, with Makoto seen practicing target shooting at one point. The extent to which firearms will factor into combat remains unclear.
nMusic and performance
nIn a surprising twist, Stranger Than Heaven also delves into the world of music. Makoto can collect and combine various sounds to create original compositions, even managing a band and setting up performances with different instruments and musicians. The game's cast includes real-life musicians like Tori Kelly, who also contributed an original theme song.
nStranger Than Heaven is scheduled for release in winter 2026 on Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 5, and PC. For Xbox owners, the game will be available on day one through Xbox Game Pass.
