Moscow – The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, executed a successful launch of the Progress MS-34 cargo spacecraft at 02:30 GMT this morning, transporting over 2.5 metric tons of supplies to the orbiting laboratory. This launch, the second from the heavily scrutinized Baikonur Cosmodrome platform, represents a deliberate effort to restore launch cadence following the damage sustained by the same platform in November.
The mission addresses immediate needs for the crew currently aboard the ISS, including 1,348 kilograms of provisions – encompassing 483 kilograms of food, 333 kilograms of hygiene supplies, and 311 kilograms of maintenance materials – alongside a crucial new Orlan-MKS spacesuit for extravehicular activities. The spacecraft also carries 1,200 kilograms of propellant, water, and oxygen, which will be automatically transferred to the station’s onboard systems.

Platform 31/6: a critical repair and rebuild
The launch follows a rapid repair of platform 31/6, damaged during the Soyuz MS-28 crewed flight in November. The platform, the sole access point for cargo and crew transport to the ISS, was brought back online just a month prior with the launch of Progress MS-33. This latest launch – a mere month after the previous – underscores Roscosmos’s commitment to maintaining uninterrupted logistical support for the station’s operations. The next scheduled launch, Soyuz MS-29, is slated for July 14th.
Mike Fincke, aboard the ISS, experienced a brief communication blackout of approximately 20 minutes during the transfer of supplies – a reminder of the inherent risks associated with long-duration spaceflight. The successful docking of Progress MS-34, scheduled for Tuesday at 01:00 GMT, is a vital step in ensuring the continued functionality of the station and the safety of its crew. The spacecraft is programmed for a controlled re-entry and destruction in Earth’s atmosphere approximately six months from launch, eliminating any residual materials.
