Spanish telecom silbö shuts down, leaving thousands stranded

Just weeks after a flashy sponsorship deal with the Spanish national football team, Silbö Telecom is abruptly ceasing operations, impacting thousands of customers and leaving a trail of financial wreckage in its wake. The Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has greenlit the disconnection of Silbö’s fiber optic and mobile services, marking the ignominious end for a company that promised a middle-ground telecom offering.

A bold strategy, quickly unraveling

Launched in 2024, Silbö aimed to carve out a niche between the premium providers like Movistar, Orange, and Vodafone, and the budget-friendly options. The company’s strategy centered on delivering a solid service without the hefty price tags associated with the market leaders. Ambitions ran high: plans included expanding to over 200 retail locations and a high-profile sponsorship deal with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

That sponsorship, costing the company €1.6 million, was particularly audacious. Securing backing from the RFEF – typically reserved for telecom giants like Telefónica – signaled Silbö's aggressive growth plans. However, the RFEF swiftly terminated the partnership in 2025, a move widely interpreted as a consequence of the company’s growing financial woes. Rumors of debt began to swirl, foreshadowing the current crisis.

Adding to the intrigue, Silbö launched an aggressively priced mobile data plan in December 2025: a mere €79 annually for unlimited data. While fiber contracts continued to operate, this pricing maneuver, coupled with the earlier sponsorship expenditure, appears to have accelerated the company's downfall. The company’s attempts to attract customers through unsustainable pricing ultimately proved to be its undoing.

As Silbö’s financial difficulties mounted, the telecom operators providing network infrastructure – Aire Networks (backed by Movistar) and Suma (linked to Orange) – petitioned the CNMC for permission to disconnect Silbö’s customers. These providers, understandably, sought to recoup their losses and stabilize their own operations.

The CNMC rulings are now final. Fiber optic services will be disconnected on May 4, 2026, providing a window for impacted customers to transition to alternative providers. A precise date for mobile service termination hasn’t been announced, though it's anticipated to follow a similar timeline. The fact that Silbö’s website still offers the annual mobile data plan underscores the chaotic and unstable nature of the situation.

The CNMC has mandated that Silbö notify its customers at least one month prior to the service shutdown, with an expected notification by early April.

This collapse serves as a stark reminder of the risks inherent in aggressive expansion strategies and unsustainable pricing models within the fiercely competitive telecommunications sector. Silbö Telecom’s story is a cautionary tale of ambition exceeding financial reality.
