Star wars explodes across fortnite: epic, disney & lucasfilm unleash galactic games

May the 4th be with you—and with a whole lot of new Star Wars content. Fortnite, Disney, and Lucasfilm are dropping a tidal wave of interactive experiences onto the battle royale behemoth, promising a galaxy far, far away within the game’s familiar framework.

A new generation of star wars games

IGN’s backstage pass revealed a multi-pronged assault on the player base, starting with three entirely new Fortnite islands – each a distinct slice of the Star Wars universe. Epic’s gamble, fueled by early assets gifted to creators in March, has clearly paid off. As Adam Sussman, President of Epic Games, succinctly put it, “We gave Star Wars’ heroes, worlds and assets to Fortnite creators so they could build the experiences they’ve always dreamed of playing.” The result? An almost limitless potential for Star Wars game design, entirely within Fortnite’s engine.

Forget simple skins; we’re talking full-fledged games. Star Wars: Galactic Siege, developed by JOGO Studios, is a 10v10 capture-the-flag title, throwing players into epic battles across the galaxy. And then there’s Star Wars: Droid Tycoon, a surprisingly engaging simulation where you construct your own bespoke droids, utilizing blueprints from the Star Wars canon – over 40 in total are available to build. Created by “FOAD” (Fear of a Dawn), this title offers a captivating blend of strategy and fan service.

Survival in a ruined galaxy

For those craving cooperative mayhem, Escape Vader, a frantic 4-player experience by Beyond Creative, pits players against a relentless, and terrifying, Darth Vader. Set on a wrecked Star Destroyer, teamwork is paramount as you desperately fight for survival. The stakes are brutally high – and the daddy is hungry.

Disney’s vision: gaming as an engagement engine

According to Sean Shoptaw, Executive VP of Disney Games and Digital Entertainment, “Interactive Entertainment is rapidly becoming one of the defining forces in how audiences experience stories.” Disney’s embracing this shift, recognizing the power of games to deepen engagement and forge genuine connections with fans. “Games offer a uniquely powerful way to deepen engagement, expand our worlds, and connect with fans in real time.”

A mandalorian preview

But the celebrations don’t end there. Keep an eye out for the new Mandalorian and Grogu Watch Party Island, launching May 19th, offering a sneak peek at a 10-minute scene from the upcoming film, slated for release on May 22nd. And on May 26th, Jon Favreau himself will be hosting a Q&A session on the island, dissecting the intricacies of the Mandalorian universe. It’s a truly immersive experience, designed to build anticipation for the film’s arrival.

The force is strong

Ultimately, this isn’t just about adding a few skins and emotes. This is a deliberate expansion of the Star Wars universe, leveraging the reach of Fortnite to introduce a new generation of fans to the galaxy’s lore. Rachel Weber, Head of Editorial Development at IGN, notes the strategic importance: “Disney is fully embracing that evolution.” And with more experiences on the horizon, the future of Star Wars in gaming looks undeniably bright – and incredibly chaotic.
