Starlink quietly boosts mini router performance, wifi range
Starlink users, accustomed to Elon Musk’s penchant for sudden, sweeping changes, are finding another upgrade quietly rolling out – this time to the increasingly ubiquitous Mini router. While official announcements remain conspicuously absent, a new hardware revision is surfacing, bringing tangible improvements to both connectivity and power delivery, leaving many wondering why Starlink continues to favor stealthy updates over transparent communication.
A surprise upgrade: more than just a cosmetic change
The shift isn't immediately apparent. Visually, the updated Mini router (seemingly replacing the UTR-251) retains a similar aesthetic, although closer inspection reveals it’s subtly taller and wider – a detail attributed to internal circuit modifications. More significantly, the port configuration has undergone a substantial upgrade. The older model featured a single Power over Ethernet (PoE) port and a fixed 9V power input. The new iteration boasts two PoE ports, offering significantly greater flexibility to power the router itself or connect network devices directly, eliminating the need for additional power adapters. Furthermore, the DC adapter’s voltage range has expanded from a limited 9V to a broader 24V, accommodating a wider range of power sources.

Wifi coverage gets a major lift
But the most compelling upgrade lies in the expanded WiFi coverage. The previous Mini router offered a respectable 120 square meters, suitable for smaller homes or apartments. The new model, however, pushes that boundary to over 200 square meters – a significant leap that addresses a common complaint about Starlink’s performance in larger homes or those with complex layouts. This improvement alone is likely to alleviate connectivity bottlenecks for many users.
The rollout appears to be staggered. While older Mini routers are still available through authorized distributors – suggesting Starlink is working through existing inventory – new subscribers are increasingly receiving the upgraded hardware. This gradual transition underscores a recurring pattern: Starlink prefers to iterate silently, relying on user discovery rather than proactive communication. The lack of official documentation leaves a frustrating gap in understanding the precise rationale behind these revisions and the long-term implications for existing users.
Despite the lack of fanfare, the enhancements to the Mini router are undeniable, bringing tangible benefits to user experience and addressing some of the limitations inherent in satellite internet.
