Stranger than heaven jumps through time, reveals five cities
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the wildly popular Like a Dragon series, just threw a curveball at fans eagerly awaiting their next project. Stranger Than Heaven, formerly known as Project Century, isn't just a single-era narrative; it's a sprawling, time-hopping adventure spanning five distinct periods and five unique cities. The reveal, delivered during the March 2026 Xbox Partner Preview, promises a significantly more ambitious scope than initially anticipated.
A chronological odyssey unlike any other
The initial announcement at The Game Awards 2024 hinted at a complex narrative, but jumping across five different time periods takes things to a whole new level. While details remain scarce—and the release date is still shrouded in mystery—the new trailer showcased glimpses of diverse settings, suggesting a narrative deeply intertwined with the ebb and flow of history. The sheer scale of the undertaking reflects RGG's increasing willingness to experiment beyond the Yakuza formula, a welcome departure for a studio known for its tight focus.
But the announcement wasn’t solely about the time-bending plot. Microsoft’s Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven broadcast, scheduled for May 6th, is poised to offer a far more detailed look at the game’s setting, story, characters, and, crucially, the gameplay mechanics that will underpin this temporal exploration. One can only speculate on how the studio intends to manage the transitions between eras – will they be seamless, or jarring shifts in perspective? The level of detail will be key to making it a compelling experience.
Of course, the elephant in the room remains the perplexing involvement of Snoop Dogg. His role in Stranger Than Heaven remains completely unclear, a detail that has fueled endless speculation online. Until May 6th, the mystery persists, adding another layer of intrigue to an already fascinating project. The March 2026 Xbox Partner Preview offered a treasure trove of announcements, but Stranger Than Heaven’s latest update is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing. RGG has consistently delivered quality, and this ambitious new direction suggests they're aiming for something truly special.
