A shocking alternate route
The movie centers on Jessie’s struggle as Bonnie becomes increasingly absorbed in an iPad-like device, leading her back to Emily, who left Jessie heartbroken years prior. But early plans included a far more complex resolution: Emily herself was slated to reappear, now a grandmother, offering a touching embrace with her former toy. This pivotal scene, meticulously sketched by concept artist Tessa Abrams, showcased a heartwarming reunion between the elderly Emily and Jessie.
“I drew this in exploration of that special, nostalgia-filled moment,” Harris explained via SlashFilm. “Though the film ultimately went in a different direction, we always knew that Jessie’s special connection to Emily would be key to Toy Story 5.” But the story didn’t end there. The art book details how the team grappled with the logistical and emotional weight of bringing Emily back, ultimately deciding it detracted from Jessie’s core narrative arc.
Abrams elaborated, “We knew from the beginning that this scene was integral to Jessie’s arc, and therefore would be one of the most difficult to execute. So I felt incredibly grateful that our directors entrusted me with the scene. Jessie defined her time with Emily by how it ended – being forgotten and thrown away, but here, she finally understands that it was worth much more than that.”
The decision to shift focus to Emily’s growth as a grandmother – symbolized by introducing Jessie to her grandchild – ultimately streamlined the narrative. It allowed the film to explore themes of acceptance and the cyclical nature of childhood, offering a satisfying, albeit altered, conclusion. The potential for Emily’s return, however, hinted at a richer, more layered story – perhaps Bonnie discovering a ‘lost toys’ message that prompted Emily’s intervention, or Jessie becoming a cherished heirloom within the family.
Despite this abandoned storyline, Toy Story 5 continues to garner positive reviews, currently boasting a 7/10 rating from IGN. Tom Phillips notes that the additions of new characters successfully bolster the established legacy.
