Tsarevna: slavic dark fantasy sparks a balletic revolution
Two years after its initial announcement, Tsarevna has undergone a dramatic transformation, shedding its initial action-hack and slash ambitions to become a strikingly original dark Slavic fantasy project.
A dance of death and myth
What began as a throwback to the 2000s and 2010s action genre has evolved into a bold venture, incorporating balletic combat sequences, a rich tapestry of Slavic mythology, and a distinctly stylized visual aesthetic. The recently released gameplay trailer offers a compelling glimpse into this reimagined world, hinting at a genuinely innovative experience.
Watt Studio’s latest offering retains its narrative core – a journey through Slavic folklore, drawing heavily from the works of Aleksandr Pushkin, particularly “The Tale of the Golden Cockerel.” Players will embody the Tsarevna of the Swan, a warrior who has seemingly cheated death and now faces the formidable forces of Slavic mythology.

Beyond the soulslike
While the game isn’t aiming for the punishing difficulty of a soulslike, Tsarevna leans towards a more frenetic, button-mashing action style. The core mechanic – a balletic combat system – is immediately apparent, with the protagonist’s movements mirroring classical dance techniques, seamlessly transitioning into devastating attacks. It’s a fascinating juxtaposition – a brutal action game rooted in the elegance of the Russian ballet.
But the surprises don’t stop there. A charming feline companion, resembling a fairytale cat, will accompany the player on their adventure. Don't expect Cheshire-like wit, however; this cat is a grumpy, flea-ridden sidekick with a penchant for sarcastic commentary and active participation in combat. A welcome, if slightly chaotic, addition.
Despite its ambitious scope, the project remains firmly rooted in development. A 2027 PC release via Steam is currently slated, with no mention of console ports. However, Watt Studio is offering an early access program – now open for registration on Steam – and a demo is expected to arrive later this fall. Keep an eye on 3DJuegos for updates.
Considering the meticulous approach of Crimson Desert, a thorough assessment of Tsarevna’s development is warranted. Watt Studio is clearly prioritizing quality, promising significant updates and a complete overhaul of the game before launch.
