Venom's fate uncertain: insomniac's shifting plans spark controversy

A protracted saga surrounding the potential development of a Venom game by Insomniac Games has taken a dramatic turn, fueled by conflicting accounts and a sudden, unsettling shift in priorities.

The spider-man symbiote's silent treatment

For over two years, whispers of a Venom spin-off, born from a massive 2023 data breach exposing internal documents, have circulated within the gaming community. The anticipation – and the inherent frustration – mounted as Insomniac remained conspicuously silent, focusing instead on the imminent release of Marvel’s Wolverine in September 2026. The prospect of a dedicated Venom title, seemingly on the cusp of materialization, now hangs precariously in the balance.

The initial seed of doubt was planted by Miles Morales voice actor, Nadji Jeter, who, during an appearance on the Love It Film podcast, revealed he’d been granted a glimpse into the game’s development. Jeter stated that a Venom project – complete with DLC – was initially greenlit, but the loss of Tony Todd, who voiced the symbiote in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, proved to be the decisive blow. “We were going to have a Venom game, yes. We were going to launch a Venom game and Venom DLC, but we lost Tony Todd,” he explained, according to Insider Gaming.

But Jeter’s account has been swiftly challenged. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, a notoriously reliable source within the industry, dismissed Jeter’s claims as “not true,” according to a concise statement on Resetera. Adding fuel to the fire, an anonymous developer – verified within the 3D Juegos forum – asserted that the game is, in fact, still under development, contradicting previous assertions. This anonymous source pointed out that Todd’s death occurred well before the GDC 2026 conference, further complicating the narrative.

Adding to the intrigue, a recent Instagram post purportedly showcasing a new PlayStation project – potentially Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 – has intensified speculation. While the exact nature of this project remains shrouded in mystery, it’s clear that Insomniac’s direction has shifted significantly. It’s a concerning situation, considering Jeter’s role as an external contractor, suggesting a potential disconnect between internal planning and publicly available information.

Insomniac and Sony have yet to issue any official statements, effectively leaving the fate of the Venom game hanging in the balance. The lack of transparency is, frankly, insulting to the dedicated fanbase. It appears, for now, that the symbiote’s cinematic ambitions may remain dormant, a casualty of creative priorities and, perhaps, unforeseen circumstances. Ultimately, the entire saga underscores a disturbing trend within the industry: projects seemingly on the verge of realization can vanish without a trace, leaving only speculation and disappointment in their wake.
