Whatsapp gets a major overhaul: say goodbye to status updates as you know them
Users have long relied on WhatsApp’s ‘States’ tab – formerly ‘Status’ – to catch up on what their contacts were up to. But prepare for a significant shift: that feature is officially being revamped.
A streamlined experience is coming
Meta is prioritizing user experience, recognizing the cluttered interface and aiming to consolidate the app’s functionality. The goal? To bring the most important content directly to your chats, the area where users spend the bulk of their time.
The wabetainfo leak reveals the changes
Industry whispers confirmed by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp’s primary source for leaked code, indicate that the redesign is already rolling out in beta versions – Android 2.26.11.2 and iOS 26.14.10.70 via TestFlight. The changes are designed to drastically simplify the interface.
Gone are the secondary tabs, leaving only a unified chat experience. Users will now access Status updates by swiping down from the chat screen – the same gesture used for refreshing a webpage.
A more intuitive status feed
The revamped status feed will appear as a horizontal row at the top of the chat screen, beneath the navigation bar. Each contact’s recent status updates will be prominently displayed, ensuring they’re easily accessible. The result? A far less intrusive and significantly more efficient way to consume status content.
Smart status prioritization
WhatsApp is introducing an algorithm to prioritize status updates based on user interaction. Your closest friends and family will appear at the top of the feed, guaranteeing you see their updates first. Contacts with whom you rarely communicate will be relegated to the bottom.
Seamless status sharing
The update also streamlines the process of sharing your own status. Simply tap the ‘+’ icon within the Chats tab to immediately access the camera, capture a photo, add text or stickers, and share directly. Furthermore, status updates will no longer appear in a strictly chronological order; the algorithm will intelligently sort them based on relevance.
Ongoing refinement
This new interface is still in its early stages of development and testing. Meta is meticulously refining the animations to ensure a fluid and intuitive swipe gesture across all devices. A global rollout is expected in the coming months, promising a more streamlined and user-friendly WhatsApp experience.
