“My mother didn’t raise me as a hypocrite”, justifies the acclaimed actor for The Whale, by Darren Aronofsky.
2022 is the year of “Brenaissance”the return of Brendan Fraser on the big screen as a morbidly obese man struggling to put his daughter (Sadie Skink) back together in the drama The Whaleby Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Mother!). Since winning acclaim at the Venice Film Festival for this project, the star actor of The Mummy seems off to a good start for this season of ceremonies: he should be on the list of candidates for the Oscar for best actor, and why not win the statuette on March 12th. On the other hand, do not count on him to participate in the Golden Globes, alias the “Oscars rehearsal.” Expected for January 10, 2023, the ceremony will take place without him, whether he is named or not, he warned in QG. And he has a good reason for not wanting to participate: four years ago, he revealed that he was shocked by the actions of Philip Berk, who was the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, whom he accuses of sexual assault during lunch preceding the 2003 edition.
The Whale: Brendan Fraser in tears before the ovation of the Venice Film Festival
“I have more of a complicated history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than respect for it, explains the actor. So no, I will not participate in the Golden Globes. I have a past with them, and my mother didn’t raise me as a hypocrite. I can be called all kinds of names, but not a hypocrite.”
In 2018, it is already in QG that he revealed this affair, detailing that Philip Berk had stroked his buttocks in front of everyone. An inappropriate gesture that he did not accept. “I don’t know if that disavowed me to the AHPF, but the silence that followed was deafeninghe explained then. Am I still scared? Absolutely. Have I ever felt the need to talk about it? Absolutely. Have I wanted to do it many times? Absolutely.” An investigation followed this revelation, but the president of the AHPF was not removed from office following this scandal. He remained in place, stating via an official press release from the group: “Although it was concluded that Mr. Berk did inappropriately touch Mr. Fraser, it appears that this gesture should be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance.” It was finally in April 2021 that he was fired, after the publication of an article in which he described the Black Lives Matter movement as “racist and hateful.” The case got very bad publicity at the Golden Globes, which have been widely criticized over the past two years for their lack of diversity. A striking example: among their 87 journalist members, responsible for voting for the best films and artists of the season (in cinema and series), there was no black person in 2021. The anger, relayed by multiple stars (Tom Cruise in the leadwho returned their trophies!) ended up leading to a radical decision on the part of NBC, the channel that historically broadcast the ceremony: it did not offer the last program live, which was also organized without an audience.
Since this catastrophic edition, we have learned that the Golden Globes 2023 would take place. Its management team has been reshuffled and NBC has decided to return to a television broadcast to broadcast it on January 10.
