This year the Golden Globes, an unmissable event in the world of cinema, had a bitter taste. Many stars shunned the ceremony, arguing a lack of diversity, representativeness and transparency among the winners. The NBC television network even gave up airing it, and the event did not receive much commentary on social networks. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which awards the prizes, has been accused in recent years of various wrongdoings, ranging from corruption to racism. Since last year’s controversy, the HFPA has tried to reform itself, in particular by including more racialized people or by prohibiting the members of the jury from receiving gifts, which could influence the votes. However, this is not enough, and no celebrity invited to present the prizes wanted to come.
The big winners of the 2022 Golden Globes are undoubtedly The Power Of Dog by Jane Campion and the remake of West Side Story by Steven Spielberg. Jane Campion (The Piano Lesson, Bright Star) and his western broadcast on Netflixbecomes the second director to receive the award for best dramatic film, after Chloe Zhao and her movie nomadlandin 2020. The film, which features Benedict Cumberbatch as a manly cowboy in 1920s Montana, also won Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Kodi Smit-McPhee. Steven Spielberg’s remake of the mythical musical of the 60s, was awarded the Golden Globe for best comedy or musical. Actresses Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose won Best Actress in a Comedy and Best Supporting Actress. Will Smith and Nicole Kidman, both absent from the ceremony, received the Globes for Best Actor and Actress in a Drama for their roles in The Williams Methodby Reinaldo Marcus Green and Being the Ricardos, by Aaron Sorkin. Considered one of the great favorites, Belfast by Kenneth Branagh inspired by the director’s Northern Irish childhood, walks away with only the prize for best screenplay.
