In the last two years, Susana Baca, the artist who was once denied a scholarship because of the color of her skin, has won her third grammy, he released his autobiography and went on tour. In the midst of rehearsals for his Saturday concert at the Grand National Theater was again nominated by the Academy for urgent words, an album dedicated to heroines and Peru. “We’re in a hurry to get this country out of this quagmire,” he tells us over the phone.
—What does the disc respond to?
—Because we have to remember the difficult moments before the pandemic, when you discovered all the weaves and handles of the corruption In our country. The outrage was visible. On the other hand, I attended an exhibition of Women of the Bicentennial, very pretty, but I remembered many more women who have not been taken into account. History is full of male heroes, but we must pay tribute to them.
—And at present, what do you think about the participation of women?
“No, no, there aren’t many. women in politics. We women have to win the space, that is, they take a double exam. The men did, with a first exam they passed. We have to try, try and prove that we are good. Last year I had the honor of being a member of the Court of the Ethical Pact of the parties and we have received complaints of attacks on women because men felt very upset because women should not intervene in politics. They insulted the candidates, they denigrated them, how horrible! I said: ‘I am living in the time of the caves’. How barbaric!
—He was in marches against corruption. Are you disappointed now?
-I think that being disappointed is natural, but we have to get over it because we cannot give our country to the feast of people who come to serve themselves, not to serve, right? I firmly believe that this is not the time to be disappointed, it is rather the time to be alert and see who is lying. Since the candidate promises impossible things, it is because he has no idea of the place he is wanting to occupy, neither of the laws nor of the economies. When a person promises you too much, it means he doesn’t know, don’t vote for him, don’t vote for him!
—Announces the second volume of your autobiography, about you in politics. Do you think there may be retaliation?
—He helped me with my dear lawyer friends (smiles). You know that what you are saying is true, but you cannot give the person you are denouncing a reason to say: ‘let’s see, let them try me’. I want to take that chapter and tell my memories and also denounce a little the game that there is to revile a person, to lower him, to annul a possible woman candidate who is saying things very clearly. There are always people who want to stop that advance.
—He closes the album –which has songs like ‘Cambalache’ or ‘Color de rosa’– with the hopeful ‘Vestida de vida’. What do you think of this government?
I feel like there’s a lot of improvisation. If the people are not prepared, they cannot govern, they have to look in a mirror and tell them so. The separation of the left with the lord Castle it’s pretty big. I don’t think people on the left think that this Government it’s leftist, no way, it’s not. And besides, on the left there are very prepared people.
—You have just given concerts in Argentina where the press asked you about the version you did of Fito Páez’s song. Are they going to meet?
-When! Oh! We are playing cat and mouse. I went there and he was in Barcelona, I think. He told me: ‘I will not be Susanita’. But we’ve promised each other that when I’m in Buenos Aires and he too or, when he comes to Lime, we are going to see each other and we are going to sing together in our houses (laughs).
Are you going to record a new song?
—Yes, yes, I am working on another theme of his that seems extraordinary to me. That it is a composition by (Daniel) Piazzolla and that he put lyrics to it. What he says is very nice, it is a wonderful tribute to Piazzolla.
—You mean ‘Fueye del sol’.
—Yes, and it will be, suddenly, for the meeting.
