The author recently sat down with narrator Jeff Hays to rank the series’ memorable character voices, a fascinating deep dive available on Audible’s YouTube channel. Amidst the analysis, Dinniman dropped a bombshell: he’s envisioning a post-Carl project centered around an alien lawyer, channeling the spirit of Jimmy McGill. ‘Do, like, the quintessential Better Call Saul, but with like maybe a New York-sort of accent’ – Hays nailed it, according to Dinniman.
But this isn’t just a pipe dream. The success of the upcoming TV adaptation for Peacock is fueling the ambition. Dinniman is targeting a total of ten books for the Carl series, with the show potentially extending his involvement considerably. The question remains: how expansive will this universe truly become?
Quasar: the ‘favorite character’ and a legal vision
During the voice ranking video, Dinniman highlighted Quasar, the fast-talking alien lawyer appointed to Carl in The Butcher’s Masquerade, as his personal favorite. ‘So my goal in life after I’m done with the Carl series is to one day write some sort of legal drama; something that involves aliens,’ he explained. This aspiration – a legal thriller featuring extraterrestrial attorneys – isn’t a fleeting fancy. Dinniman’s commitment to this concept is palpable, and the Better Call Saul influence is undeniable.
While a Crocodile graphic novel spin-off is slated for March 2027, Dinniman has indicated he’s currently not pursuing further DCC spinoffs, pending the reception of the television adaptation. The success of Crocodile will undoubtedly shape his future creative direction. But the potential for a Quasar-centric legal drama remains a significant and intriguing prospect.
