Barbie 2 Stall: Greta Gerwig, Gosling, and Robbie Face Deadline Threat

Negotiations for a sequel to 2023’s blockbuster Barbie have collapsed, leaving director Greta Gerwig, writer Noah Baumbach, and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling teetering on the brink of losing their involvement. Warner Bros. is facing a December 2026 deadline to secure a deal, or risk losing the entire creative team behind the record-breaking $1.5 billion film.

Standoff at the Top

According to a new report from The New York Times, a months-long impasse between Warner Bros. and the talent involved has stalled progress on Barbie 2. Initial offers, including a profit-sharing arrangement for Gosling – reportedly seeking $20 million – were rejected, with talent representatives citing a lack of movement from the studio.

Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav, it’s understood, views the proposed terms as ‘too generous,’ a stance vehemently refuted by studio representatives who claim the talent team has yet to submit a counteroffer following a preliminary offer in May. The situation is now acutely time-sensitive. Failure to reach an agreement by December will trigger a reversion of the film’s rights back to Mattel, effectively ending Gerwig and Baumbach’s vision for a follow-up and potentially derailing any future live-actionBarbie installments.

Mattel’s Position

Warner Bros. co-chairs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca released a statement acknowledging the difficulties, stating, ‘Unfortunately, we have been unable to reach an agreement thus far.’ However, sources indicate that Mattel retains the rights to the franchise, opening the possibility – albeit a distant one – of another Barbie movie being produced by a different studio, stripped of its established narrative and, crucially, without the core creative team.

Gerwig herself, in a March 2024 interview with Deadline, expressed a desire to return, though she acknowledged the lengthy wait ahead. Robbie and the creative team had previously tempered expectations, suggesting a protracted development process. With no immediate resolution in sight, the future of the Barbie franchise hangs precariously in the balance – a remarkable outcome for a film that once seemed destined to redefine the box office landscape.
