Bruce Campbell Officially Retires From Playing Ash Williams

Bruce Campbell has definitively retired from the role of Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise, confirming in a recent interview with Screen Rant that he will not reprise the character, even for voice-over work. Campbell, a veteran of the horror genre since 1981's original The Evil Dead and a frequent collaborator with director Sam Raimi (including appearances in Raimi's Spider-Man and Doctor Strange films), stated that creatives will need to find a soundalike or alternative solution.

Campbell's Shifting Involvement in the Franchise

Campbell's involvement in the Evil Dead series has been decreasing in recent years. He explained that he was largely uninvolved in Evil Dead Rise, the latest installment, due to his focus on directing his own film, Ernie and Emma. While he will hold an executive producer credit on Evil Dead Wrath, he anticipates limited involvement.

“It really boils down to that: spending time in another country working on somebody else’s movie, or spending time in your hometown working on your own movie?” Campbell told Screen Rant. “It wasn't a hard choice.”

Health Considerations and Future Projects

Earlier this year, Campbell revealed he had been diagnosed with a treatable, but not curable, cancer. This may have influenced his decision to prioritize other creative endeavors and make the most of his time. Following his work at Alamo Drafthouse, he plans to embark on another tour.
