Buffy reboot canceled: zhao's vision fails to resurrect vampire slayer

Hulu has scrapped its highly anticipated revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, just months before a planned 2026 release. Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao, the director tasked with bringing the series to a new generation, confirmed the project's demise in a candid interview at the Oscars red carpet, citing a desire to remain “truthful” to the original.

Creative differences cited in buffy revival's cancellation

The news sent shockwaves through the fandom, with original star Sarah Michelle Gellar announcing the cancellation to fans on social media. Reports from Deadline suggest that disagreements over the series' creative direction between Zhao and Hulu ultimately led to the decision. Sources described the pilot as “not perfect,” hinting that Zhao’s artistic vision didn’t align with Hulu's expectations for the beloved franchise. The pilot, filmed last summer with Gellar in a brief cameo, had generated considerable buzz among fans eager for a continuation of the iconic series.

“I’m not surprised,” Zhao stated, adding that her priority was to honor the original show and its fanbase. “Things happen for a reason.” Ryan Kiera Armstrong, cast as the series' new lead, expressed disappointment but gratitude for the experience, acknowledging the enduring power of Buffy. She offered a hopeful note, suggesting the story of Buffy isn’t over.

This isn't the first time a Buffy revival has faced hurdles. Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase in the original series, had previously expressed hope for a return to Sunnydale after her character’s abrupt departure. The cancellation leaves the future of the Buffy universe uncertain, though Hulu is reportedly exploring alternative ways to continue the franchise.
