Dark souls voice actor lands role in elden ring movie – a chance encounter fue the key

Peter Serafinowicz, the voice behind Darth Maul and a legion of other iconic characters, has secured a surprising role in the upcoming Elden Ring film – thanks to a serendipitous meeting with Dark Souls aficionado Alex Garland.

From voice actor to screen star: a twisted path

The journey began with a simple conversation in a reception area, a chance encounter that blossomed into a friendship and, ultimately, a starring position in FromSoftware’s sprawling fantasy epic. Serafinowicz, a seasoned performer known for his distinctive vocal work, initially captivated audiences with his passionate descriptions of Dark Souls’ notoriously challenging gameplay. He described the game as “teaching you that no obstacle is insurmountable,” a sentiment that clearly resonated with Garland, a fellow devotee of the genre.

Serafinowicz’s involvement stems from his extensive work crafting the dying sounds and pained grunts of male characters within the Dark Souls series. He initially “bullied” his way into a voice acting role for Dark Souls 2, leveraging his enthusiasm and expertise. But the real breakthrough came when FromSoftware approached him to provide the audio for character deaths – a surprisingly significant contribution to the game’s atmosphere. “They asked me to provide the exertion noises for if you played as a male character,” he explained, “so all the, ‘when you die’ – which is often in these games. I play Elden Ring now and they’ve kept my sounds in all the subsequent games.”

The connection with Alex Garland, currently directing the Elden Ring movie, solidified the path to the big screen. A brief exchange about their shared love for Dark Souls sparked a friendship, and when Garland began developing the film, Serafinowicz was naturally among the first to be considered. “Quite a few years ago we were in the same reception area, I was going for an audition. He had some kind of meeting there. Didn’t know him, but he came over and introduced himself to me and was like, ‘You’re Peter Serafinowicz aren’t you?’ I said, ‘Yeah, you’re Alex Garland.’ ‘Yeah, I’m a big fan.’ He was like, ‘You like video games, don’t you?’ And I said, ‘Well, I like one video game.’ ‘It’s Dark Souls, right?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah,’ because I’d talked about it a bit. And he said, ‘I’m just the biggest Dark Souls fan.’ And we were just enthusing about all these different aspects of this wonderful game, and we became friends based on this little interaction, right?”

A dream come true

Now, Serafinowicz is starring in the Elden Ring movie, a testament to his passion and the power of a shared obsession. “I just can’t believe my luck. I just can’t believe that, that it’s like, wow, dude. Wow, man!” He added, demonstrating a perfectly timed death noise – a chilling reminder of the game’s unforgiving nature. The film, backed by A24 and boasting a budget exceeding $100 million, promises a faithful adaptation of FromSoftware’s masterpiece, guided by Hidetaka Miyazaki and based on a script penned by George R. R. Martin. With a cast including Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, and Nick Offerman, the Elden Ring movie is set to hit theaters on March 3, 2028.
