Dc universe shuffles plans: ‘authority’ movie axed, ‘booster gold’ and ‘paradise lost’ remain alive
James Gunn, DC Universe’s chief creative officer, has delivered a significant shakeup to the studio’s upcoming slate, shelving the long-gestating ‘Authority’ movie while simultaneously offering a glimmer of hope for ‘Booster Gold’ and ‘Paradise Lost’ television series.
A shift in focus: ‘authority’ officially dead
After a tumultuous development cycle marked by script revisions and concerns about aligning with the evolving tone of the DC Universe – particularly in light of Amazon’s ‘The Boys’ – Gunn confirmed the ‘Authority’ project is no longer moving forward. He stated bluntly that the script “wasn’t quite there” and, more crucially, “didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU.” The decision, he admitted, was influenced by the impact of ‘The Boys’ on audience expectations, a factor that significantly complicated the project’s trajectory. Gunn acknowledged the challenges, citing the established fan base surrounding characters like those from the WildStorm Universe and the complexities of integrating them into a broader narrative.
‘Booster gold’ and ‘paradise lost’ – still in play
Despite the demise of ‘Authority’, Gunn expressed optimism for two other projects currently in development. ‘Booster Gold,’ currently in “extreme development,” is reportedly further along than ‘Paradise Lost,’ which is also “in development.” While Gunn isn’t directly involved in writing either series – he’s heavily focused on ‘Man of Tomorrow’ – the news represents a welcome reprieve for fans eagerly awaiting these properties. ‘Paradise Lost,’ described as a ‘Game of Thrones’-esque story exploring the origins of Themyscira and Wonder Woman’s homeland, promises a sprawling, pre-birth story with significant potential.
Roadmap update
The DC Universe’s future remains in flux. ‘Lanterns’ on HBO Max, ‘Supergirl,’ ‘Clayface,’ and ‘Man of Tomorrow’ are still slated for release, alongside the upcoming ‘The Brave and the Bold’ introducing a new iteration of Batman. However, the timeline for ‘The Brave and the Bold’ remains shrouded in uncertainty. Gunn’s commitment to a polished script and a cohesive universe – a strategy clearly influenced by the success (and cautionary tale) of ‘The Boys’ – is shaping the studio's priorities. It’s a deliberate, if somewhat cautious, approach. Ultimately, Gunn’s focus remains on quality, prioritizing a finished script over a rushed release.
