Lucas joins ‘minions & monsters,’ promises more from the yellow gang
George Lucas, the architect of a cinematic universe, is trading the Star Wars galaxy for a chaotic corner of Illumination’s animation studio. The legendary filmmaker has lent his voice to ‘Minions & Monsters,’ and – crucially – is already discussing potential expansion within the burgeoning ‘Minions’ franchise.
Unexpected turn for the icon
Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri confirmed Lucas’s involvement during an interview with Collider, revealing the actor’s contribution came about surprisingly fast. ‘An idea for a character came up out of the story,’ Meledandri explained, ‘and so I said to Pierre [Coffin], who co-wrote the movie with Brian Lynch, and Bill Ryan, who produces with me on the film, and I just said, ‘Well, what if we could get George?’ And they’re like, ‘Are you kidding me?’’
The initial reaction, according to Meledandri, was disbelief. ‘I had no idea, but I got such a fast yes.’ Lucas’s enthusiasm, fueled by a genuine love for Illumination’s work – particularly the ‘Minions’ – proved irresistible.
A nostalgic connection
Meledandri highlighted a recent meeting with Lucas, explaining that the filmmaker’s passion for the ‘Minions’ films stemmed from a prior encounter. ‘I had this privilege of meeting George about two years ago, and what led to my meeting him is how much he loves Illumination Movies, and specifically Despicable Me, and even more specifically, the Minions.’ This shared appreciation, Meledandri emphasized, was ‘such a thrill to learn that and then to share it with the team.’
Future plans – and possible cameos
The involvement isn't limited to this single film. Lucas has already approached Meledandri about potential roles in future ‘Minions’ installments, signaling a deeper, and potentially ongoing, collaboration. ‘I saw him recently,’ Meledandri stated, ‘and he’s already talking to me about the role he wants to do next in the next Minions movie. So, it’s pretty incredible.’ Speculation is rife that Lucas might appear as an animated version of himself, given Illumination’s planned exploration of Hollywood in the next ‘Minions’ adventure.
A legacy continues
While Lucas is perhaps best remembered for his groundbreaking work on ‘Star Wars,’ his impact on Hollywood is undeniable. This latest venture represents a return to the screen, albeit in an unexpected capacity. ‘Minions & Monsters’ premieres July 1, 2026. Illumination, already a powerhouse with hits like ‘The Grinch,’ ‘The Secret Life of Pets,’ and now ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movies,’ is clearly capitalizing on the enduring appeal of its diminutive, yellow stars.
