Marvel's Wolverine Gameplay Sparks Criticism, Director Addresses Backlash

Mike Daly, director of Marvel’s Wolverine, responded to recent criticism surrounding the game’s extended gameplay showcase. The reveal, featuring story beats, character interactions, traversal, combat, and a Sentinel boss fight, quickly drew online scrutiny from players.

Viral Posts Highlight Criticisms

Numerous viral posts mocked specific aspects of the footage, including comparisons to the divisive yellow paint in modern games, a heated argument between Wolverine and Sabertooth due to voice acting concerns, and the Sentinel boss fight. One tweet directly compared the Wolverine fight to the boss battle in the 2007 PS2 game Ben 10: Protector of Earth, while another criticized its similarity to the 2009 X-Men Origins game – a title released nearly 20 years prior.

Comparisons to Older Games

Critics pointed out clear similarities to Ben 10 and deemed Insomniac’s Sentinel fight “common, dull,” contrasting it unfavorably with the more engaging boss fight in the 2007 X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Director Welcomes Feedback

Speaking with TheGamer, Daly acknowledged the backlash, viewing it as a positive sign that Insomniac is meeting player expectations. He admitted the studio is “pretty used to” such responses, describing it as “a good problem to have” and a natural consequence of developing games based on beloved superheroes. Despite recognizing Insomniac’s ability to create successful games, Daly acknowledged that critics will inevitably find fault. “I rest easy about this, knowing that our goal for the game wasn't necessarily to accomplish these things that people complain about. Our goal really was to focus completely on making the best game for the character,” he stated.
