Maul returns: new animated series unleashes a shadowy glimpse
The galaxy’s far, far away just got a lot darker. Disney+ is preparing to unleash Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Hunter, a new animated series poised to delve deeper into the enigmatic figure of Darth Maul, and a tantalizing first clip has already sparked fervent discussion among fans.
Sam witwer's return fuels anticipation
What makes this release particularly compelling isn’t just the return of Maul, a fan-favorite villain, but the fact that it's spearheaded by Sam Witwer, the actor who has previously lent his voice and motion capture talents to the character. Witwer’s involvement promises a nuanced and authentic portrayal, building on the already established depth of Maul’s persona. The newly released clip, quickly circulating across social media, showcases a striking visual presentation of the character, hinting at the intensity and darkness to come.
The series picks up during the tumultuous Dark Times, a period following the fall of the Republic, and sees Maul attempting to rebuild his criminal empire, seizing control of underworld factions. But this isn't a solo endeavor. Maul is actively recruiting and training a new apprentice in the ways of the dark side, further expanding his influence and reach on a planet outside the grasp of the Galactic Empire. The synopsis explicitly states his ambition to “train a new apprentice in the ways of the Force.”
Beyond Witwer, the voice cast includes A.J. LoCascio, Gideon Adlon, Wagner Moura, and Richard Ayoade—a collection of talented performers adding further weight to the production. Moura, known for his role in Narcos, is a particularly interesting addition, suggesting a complexity beyond the typical Star Wars villain archetype. The animation style, as glimpsed in the clip, appears to blend a gritty realism with the signature Star Wars aesthetic, promising a visual experience that complements the narrative’s darker tone.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Hunter premieres on Disney+ April 6, 2026, with the debut of its first two episodes. The initial reaction to the teaser clip has been overwhelmingly positive, with fans eager to explore this new chapter in Maul’s story. The series' focus on the power dynamics within the criminal underworld, and Maul's mentorship of a new apprentice, offers a unique and potentially compelling narrative arc within the broader Star Wars canon – a welcome departure from the sweeping galactic conflicts that often dominate the franchise.
