Marvel star Simu Liu has provided an encouraging update on the long-awaited adaptation of the video game ‘Sleeping Dogs,’ stating that the project now has a clear direction as discussions continue with Square Enix.

Liu Expresses Optimism for ‘Sleeping Dogs’ Film

Responding to a fan inquiry on X/Twitter, Liu confirmed that the film is “moving along really well” and includes a director and production company. He highlighted the ongoing dealmaking process with the game studio, expressing excitement about the collaboration with Square Enix.

Project Development Timeline

Following the cancellation of Donnie Yen’s involvement in early 2025, Liu stepped in to lead the development of the movie based on Square Enix and United Front Games’ crime drama. Story Kitchen, a veteran studio specializing in video game adaptations, is also involved, having completed the script draft in October 2025.

Creative Team & Setting

Timo Tjahjanto, known for his work in ‘Nobody’ and ‘Killers,’ is the confirmed director. The film is set in a vibrant, neon-infused neo-noir Hong Kong, focusing on Wei Shen, an undercover cop grappling with his loyalty to both the law and his family’s violent Triad connections.

Current Status

The ‘Sleeping Dogs’ movie currently lacks a firm release date. However, Liu emphasized that the team is actively working toward a potential release, fueled by fan support.
