A new rambo, a new approach
Jalmari Helander, director of Sisu and Sisu: Road to Vengeance, is taking the helm of this ambitious project, tasked with charting Rambo’s experiences in Vietnam – a narrative typically relegated to flashbacks in the established film series. Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani are penning the script, aiming to flesh out the character’s backstory beyond the trauma-induced PTSD we’ve come to expect.
But the stakes are undeniably raised by Lionsgate’s enthusiastic response. Adam Fogelson, President of Lionsgate, delivered a particularly pointed assessment: “The footage that Jalmari has filmed is extraordinary. It’s a better version of what I believed possible. At this stage in my career, it’s rare that you’ll get daily takes that genuinely take your breath away. You can be satisfied or say ‘Oh, no!’ but these daily takes are impactful.”
Noah Centineo is stepping into Rambo’s boots, and Fogelson is adamant that Centineo isn’t merely a replacement, but a fresh interpretation respectful of Stallone’s legacy – while simultaneously forging an entirely original path. He emphasized the intention to fully explore Rambo’s psychological state, offering a nuanced understanding of the character’s descent.
While production details remain deliberately scarce – the full title, both in English and potentially Spanish, is yet to be confirmed – the anticipation is palpable. The film promises to delve into the harrowing realities of the Vietnam War, moving beyond the superficial trauma often depicted and offering a more profound examination of the character’s formative years.
