Bad Bunny conquers the world singing in Spanish and leads the Latin power

Spanish is the fourth most spoken language in the world, behind English, Chinese and Hindi, which makes it difficult for Spanish-speaking artists to rise and stay on the American charts, if anyone wanted to enter the market they had to sing in English so did ShakiraRicky Martin or Gloria Estefan. However, today urban music is changing that.

The example is bad bunnywho this year leads the Latin Grammy nominations, by achieving 10, for your album A summer without you. As if that were not enough, a few weeks ago he became the first non-English-speaking interpreter to win the award for Artist of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards.

It was right there where spoke of this dream of conquering the world without forgetting his roots: “I believed from the beginning that I could become great, that I could become one of the biggest stars in the world without having to change my culture, my language, my language and my jargon. I am Benito Antonio Martínez, from Puerto Rico to the whole world.”

This furor is not only in awards and nominations. According to data from the Recording Industry Association of the US, Latin music billed around US$654.6 million in 2020, of which some 630.1 million came from streaming services.

Today that speech is defended by artists like Camilo, the Colombian assured that Latin music is experiencing a great moment, as songs in Spanish compete with others in English: “Before it was a local niche in a global picture. We were like the cousins that appear to the side, that cut them down sometimes, and now they put us closer to the center, they no longer erase us. I love that, that we go out and with the pride of being Latinos.”

But not only the urban genre appreciates this boom, the indie rock band Vetusta Morla considers that technology has been a strong ally for the rise of music in Spanish, because it is available to everyone.

“Perhaps since the heyday of the mambo in the 1940s and 1950s, there has not been another moment so open of this popularity and diversity of artists in so many different countries and especially Anglo-Saxons, where it seemed that they were impossible to penetrate; and it is due, I think, to the fact that young people are also changing their way of thinking”, said Guillermo Galván, guitarist of the band.

Regarding the Puerto Rican’s speech, the Spaniard assured that this is art and he supports it: “It’s trying to bring the culture you believe in to others, it’s a bridge between different cultures to multiply.”
