Bad Bunny: the poetic verses of his songs

For both those who hate him and love him, his influence is unquestionable. His power through music and aesthetics has achieved an unprecedented generational change.

In 2020, the Puerto Rican was recognized with the Best Composer of the Year award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), generating controversy among his detractors who consider his music “mediocre” and ” tasteless”.

From his beginnings as an independent artist on SoundCloud to becoming the greatest exponent of urban music today, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, has been characterized by a musical style defined by trap.

With the release of his album “Un Verano Sin Ti”, Bad Bunny marked a before and after in his career. Several of his songs evidenced the quality of his composition with poetic verses and deep lyrics, influenced by Caribbean musical genres and rhythms, from reggaeton, Latin trap and dembow, to merengue, cumbia, reggae and dancehall.

In a genre in which lyrics with a high sexual content predominate and which mostly use the figure of women, Bad Bunny has managed to deconstruct the archetype of urban music and represent the new generations and their diversity.

With “Un Verano Sin Ti”, Bad Bunny got the recognition he needed on the world music scene. His songs rose to the top of the popularity and streaming charts. Most of them evidenced the quality of his composition with deep and poetic verses, influenced by Caribbean musical genres and rhythms, from reggaeton, Latin trap and dembow, to merengue, cumbia, reggae and dancehall.

With a short but promising career, his music has also led him to explore and confront realities such as gender violence, feminism, sexual diversity and the politics of his country.

He recently received three nominations at the 2023 Grammy Awards, in the categories of Album of the Year (first album in Spanish to get it), Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Urban Music Album. At the last installment of the MTV Video Music Awards, he became the first Latino to win the Artist of the Year award.

He has also managed to place two of his albums, “El último tour del mundo” and “Un verano sin ti”, at number one on the Billboard 200 list, a milestone that no Latino artist had achieved until now.
