Lady Gaga breaks record at MTV Video Music Awards

Lady Gaga, who set an MTV Video Music Awards record with 13 nominations, received eight accolades on Sunday, including best music video of the year and best dance for “Bad Romance,” as well as to the best collaboration for “Telephone” in which Beyonce also participated. But beyond Lady Gaga’s long-awaited multi-award show, the spotlight in Los Angeles seemed to focus on Kanye West, who interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech last year, saying her trophy should have gone to Beyonce. The incident hurt Swift emotionally, but West was the one who suffered the most serious damage, as she became very unpopular.

On Sunday night, Swift appeared to absolve West of his sin from last year onstage with a somber song, while West, also with a song, once again apologized for his misbehavior. Though West didn’t speak directly about last year’s onstage incident, he did rap and sing a song in which he poked fun at his own rude behavior, which has overshadowed his music. Swift, for her part, seemed to offer an olive branch to West, with her song “Innocent,” written earlier in the year: “Everybody’s been wrong too…hope you remember today it’s never too late to start again”. Gaga accepted her award for best music video in a dress that surely angered PETA, the world’s largest animal rights group: a dress and hat made from what appeared to be pieces of raw meat, including a red meat bag It was one of three extravagant dresses that she wore during the ceremony. Another of the dresses that Gaga showed was by the late designer Alexander McQueen, which she wore with huge heels. Cher – a diva from another era – presented the award to Gaga. She stressed that while Lady Gaga “was still a baby Gaga,” she had her turn to wow audiences. Gaga accepted the trophies from her with tears in her eyes and sang the title of her new album as she received the latest accolade: “Born This Way.” There were also a few highlights during the ceremony, despite performances by Usher, Eminem and Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Linkin Park, and appearances by Nicki Minaj and the cast of MTV’s popular reality show “Jersey Shore.” Lindsay Lohan appeared for the first time after serving her sentence in prison, Eminem performed “Love the Way You Lie” with Rihanna and Lady Gaga thanked the gays. Host Chelsea Handler descended from the roof wearing a Lady Gaga-esque dress and a huge hat in the shape of a house. Handler appeared in a video receiving spankings from the participants in the backstage show and then running towards Lohan, who also gave him one of hers.

“Have you been drinking alcohol?” Lohan asked Handler. “Do you think anyone would want to work with a drunk? Trust me, no one does!”
