MTV Video Music Awards 2022: The Best Red Carpet Outfits

(CNN) — The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards took place this Sunday and stars like Lizzo and Blackpink dazzled on the red carpet of the big night.

Compared to Hollywood award ceremonies, the VMAs often see attendees loosen up and show off their personalities, often choosing fun, sexy, or experimental outfits over formal suits and ball gowns. Fashion history has been made here too, like Lil’ Kim’s one-sleeved purple jumpsuit and seashell nipple cover in 1999 or Lady Gaga’s infamous meat dress in 2010.

This year’s event, held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, saw performances from the likes of Bad Bunny and Nicki Minaj, with Jack Harlow and LL Cool J hosting. Celebrity fashion watchers also had a lot to celebrate, as designer favorites like Taylor Swift, Lil Nas X and Becky G came out in stunning ensembles.

Many stars dressed in dark tones to match this year’s “black carpet,” though they livened up the outfits with fetish-inspired accessories, like singer Dove Cameron’s chunky leather choker, or pops of color, like Sabrina Carpenter’s rainbow decorations.

Stars also dared to get naked, with celebs including Ashley Graham, Tate McRae and Blackpink’s Jennie showing off their midriffs. Meanwhile, Maneskin’s Anitta and Victoria de Angelis paid apparent homage to Lil’ Kim’s famous outfit at the 1999 VMAs with trendy nipple covers.

Some of the men of the night also undressed. And gender-fluid fashion brought a certain softness to menswear ensembles, like Ethan Torchio’s sheer corset from Maneskin, Conan Gray’s lace train suit from Harris Reed, and Bob the Drag Queen’s white skirt, which combined with a plaid blazer and a vest.
