Taylor Swift is preparing to direct her first feature film from her original script

Pop star Taylor Swift will make her feature directorial debut after penning an original screenplay for the Searchlight Pictures film.

The studio behind the Oscar-winning films “Nomadland,” “The Shape of Water” and “Birdman” announced the news in a statement Friday.

Searchlight did not share any further details about the film’s story or plot.

Searchlight presidents David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield called Swift “a once-in-a-generation artist and storyteller.”

“It is a joy and a privilege to collaborate with her as she embarks on this exciting new creative journey,” they said.

Swift is deep in Oscar momentum for her music video and short film, “All Too Well,” which was part of the 2021 re-release of her “Red” album. The film, a semi-autobiographical narrative of a relationship that falls apart, had special screenings at the Tribeca Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. In Toronto, she made a striking panel appearance with actor Cameron Bailey, who starred in the short film.

At that event, he talked about the type of movies he hoped to direct in the future.

“I could see it in a more comedic and irreverent place,” Swift said. “I don’t always see myself telling stories about extreme, guttural heartbreak at your most formative age that really…debilitates you emotionally for years and then you have to develop the scar tissue to move on with your life…I think I’ve done that.

Throughout her career, Swift has directed her own music videos. A recent video for her single “Anti-Hero” was criticized for alleged fatphobia.

His recent “All Too Well” video, which features the 10-minute version of his song of the same name, and his subsequent awards have signaled a shift from music videos to short films, despite debate over whether to categorize the video as such.

As a music video, the short won the MTV Video Music, Europe Music, and American Music Awards.

Fellow music artist Kendrick Lamar is also making a similar effort to earn a Live Action Short Film nomination with the music video for his song “We Cry Together.” from his latest album, “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers”.

Swift has received praise for her efforts as a director. She is set to make an appearance in the series “Directors on Directors & quot; from Variety, which features high-profile filmmakers like James Cameron and Ryan Coogler in conversation with each other. She will speak with Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin McDonagh, whose film “The Banshees of Inisherin” has received awards buzz.

The announcement of his inclusion in the series also sparked a backlash from fans and people within the film industry who questioned his pedigree, in comparison to other filmmakers on the series, saying that he took the place of other, more deserving directors. Some attributed his rapid rise to the attention of directors to his stardom and wealth.

“All Too Well” has garnered positive reviews among critics and has spawned a pop cultural obsession over who Swift’s love interest is in the film (predominant theories point to Jake Gyllenhaal, despite his denial), as well as lore. on her red scarf. What does the song refer to?
