nickelback they have remembered how a comedian’s joke about the band ran non-stop on television so that, for decades, many people ended up hating them. (via Louder Sound)
It is true that Canadians have been vilified for many years for various reasons, although, as they confessed in a new interview with the KFC Radio podcast, in the early 2000s, this joke made their lives miserable.
In a monologue, comedian and actor brian posehn there was talk about the old topic that music can make people violent quoting the band. The specific sentence is the following: “Nobody talks about the studies that show bad music makes people violent. For example, Nickelback makes me want to kill Nickelback. They’re horrible, believe me.”
Now, Chad Kroeger talks about the terrible consequences this joke had for the group: “Some comedian—I’m going to have to look up the guy’s name to go bomb his house—makes a shitty joke about us. And he’s on Comedy Central. They took it and put it in an ad for that show.”
“And that was on Comedy Central for six months straight, this Nickelback joke. That started it all. That’s where it really started, at that point. And then it started being in movies and we have all of this.”
Drummer Daniel Adair also commented that after teasing Nickelback so much, people began to really hate them, sometimes without even listening.
“It was like an expectation. Charlie Benante, the drummer from Anthrax, came to a concert of ours about five or six years ago. I spoke to him afterwards and he said, ‘I thought I was supposed to hate Nickelback.'”
“Like he didn’t think of it, like it was pre-programmed. And he said, ‘I know all these songs, you guys are fucking great.’ That took him out of his ‘we’ve got to hate this band’ nebula.”
The good part is that Nickelback takes it with humor and, to this day, they have the feeling that they are less hated: “I think the great reset has taken place.”
“We call it the softening of the band. Like people have kept their claws“, ends the drummer.
