Wisin and Yandel are known as “the duo of history”. This couple of reggaeton singers from Puerto Rico, with a 20-year career behind them -interrupted for five years in 2013-, are true icons of the genre, so representative in their country of origin.
To his extensive list of awards, which include a Grammy, two Latin Grammys, ten Latin Billbord Awards or an MTV Video Music Award, the Presidential Award from Broadcast Music Inc (BMI) will soon be added. This broadcasting rights organization will thus recognize his achievements and contributions to Latin music during his two decades of experience.
In the official statement issued by BMI, it was highlighted that “the pioneers of reggaeton and winners of multiple awards” will be honored at the 29th edition of the awards sponsored by the organization, which will take place on March 15 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly. Hills, in California.
Jesús González, creative vice president of BMI, considered that “Wisin and Yandel are authentic innovators of reggaeton and urban music. His music transcends generations and has influenced many artists of all genres, which has helped push Latin music forward.”
Therefore, “we are delighted to finally be able to come together and present this outstanding honor to the duo of history, whose undeniable chemistry and talents have earned them legions of fans around the world,” he added.
In this way, the duo will join other prestigious award-winning artists, such as Carlos Vives, Gloria Trevi, Juanes, Luis Fonsi, Mario Quintero, Pitbull and Sergio George, among others.
This award could be the last triumph of his career, since at the end of 2021 the couple announced that they would separate definitively. With the album “The last mission”, which will be published in the spring of this year, the singers commented that “it was necessary to close this cycle correctly”.
Unlike his previous separation, this one does indicate that it will be the definitive one, although each one will go their own way. According to them, it is due to “personal reasons”.
For Wisin, after “so many years of joint sacrifice”, the time has come to close this chapter that united their careers and lives in a big way. “I will always be involved in music. Retiring is never going to happen. What I do is what I love, which is not work, but something I enjoy”, Wisin clarified.
For his part, Yandel clarified that his album and farewell tour were already prepared before the pandemic, and that they waited for the restrictions to be relaxed to launch the announcement. “We have energy left, race and we will see what happens. We are addicted to music and we will move on, ”he specified.
His fans were already able to hear a preview of his latest album, “Recordar”, which was created by Dj David Guetta himself. The couple themselves define it as “a refreshing style, in which we bring back memories of what Wisin and Yandel are”. The rhythm moves away from its most classic reggaeton, and is closer to Afrobeat rhythms, although with its unmistakable and penetrating choruses.
