The governor of the Atlantic, Elsa Noguera, reopens the Salgar Castle with a cultural program dedicated to highlighting the legacy of Gabriel García Márquez. The event will take place this December 10, from 3:00 pm

Sazón Atlántico also takes over the Castle with a sample of the most representative festivals, which will be available on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December.

The reopening occurs after an intervention in the maintenance of the physical structure, preserving the heritage values, which was advanced by the Government of the Atlantic.

The Salgar Castle reopens its doors, after carrying out maintenance works, with a great event: the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Nobel Prize that Gabriel García Márquez received. Gabo’s yellow butterflies will match the walls of the building, where his characters will come to life and the flavors of Macondo will be enjoyed in a great gastronomic display of the Sazón Atlántico festivals.

“The programming at the Castillo de Salgar will begin this Saturday at 3:00 in the afternoon, with literature, theater, music, a craft fair, ventures, and a children’s area. In addition to the beautiful view that the Castillo de Salgar offers us, we will have the festivals of Sazón Atlántico on Saturday and Sunday. One more reason to visit one of the most precious places in our department,” said the governor, Elsa Noguera.

On December 10, 1982, Gabriel García Márquez received the Nobel Prize for Literature, a fact that marked the history of the country before the world. For this reason, within the framework of 40 years, storytellers, writers, friends and characters who were part of this event will meet at the Salgar Castle. On Saturday the activities will last until 9:00 at night, in an agenda of talks, workshops, photographic exhibition and theater. Similarly, the Sazón Atlántico sample will feature Pital de Megua cakes, products from the Guandú Festival, the Almojábana Festival, among others. On Sunday, the gastronomic offer is the protagonist, with points of sale and areas to share, from 12:00 noon.

“In the Salgar Castle we will meet Rebeca Buendía, Remedios la Bella, Mauricio Babilonia and his yellow butterflies; but also with characters who were in the front row accompanying the Nobel Prize celebration in Stockholm 40 years ago. It will be an experience to delve into the universe of Macondo, but also to learn details of Gabo’s life and the anecdotes of those who knew him,” declared the Secretary of Culture and Heritage, Diana Acosta.

Recovery of the infrastructure of the Castle

In order to recover the infrastructure of the Salgar Castle, the Government of the Atlantic, through the ‘Parks for the People’ program, carried out adaptation works on the façade, the landscaping and the improvement of the lighting, achieving that this heritage of architecture shows a new face to its visitors. The works were carried out in an area of ​​3,000 square meters and had an investment of 1,200 million pesos.

The manager of ‘Parques para la Gente’, Jorge Ávila, explained that “within these works, activities were carried out for the removal of stucco, paint and plaster from the façade, pressure washing, recovery of concrete beams that were in poor condition , application of plastic stucco on plaster for exterior painting and installation of gray ceramic flooring”.

In addition, in the landscaping works, 10 units of coconut palm were planted, different species such as green mangroves, purple, assorted and juanita trinitaria, beach grapes, mat grass and morning glory were also installed. “All these green areas have their irrigation system for maintenance,” added the official.

To these works is added the protection of wooden windows, painting of the railings on the edge of the cliff in wood, as well as the led lighting of the façade and exteriors, and the signage of the Castle.
