At the opening ceremony on Sunday, two scientists were awarded the inaugural award from the World Laureates Association (WLA), an international scientific prize created in Shanghai in 2021.

The 2022 WLA Prize in Life Sciences or Medicine went to the German biochemist Dirk Gorlich for his key discoveries in elucidating the mechanism and selectivity of protein transport between the cytoplasm and the nucleus, and the 2022 WLA Prize in Computer Science or Mathematics was awarded to the American researcher Michael I. In September 2021, the city published its 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) to become a center of scientific and technological innovation with global influence.

Under the plan, Shanghai aims to increase its R&D spending intensity, or R&D spending as a percentage of its GDP, to about 4.5% in 2025. Among them, the proportion of funding for basic research will reach 12%.

The city also aims to increase the value added of emerging strategic industries to 20% of its GDP by 2025, three percentage points higher than the country’s overall target.

By 2025, the city aims to have more than 26,000 high-tech companies and 560 foreign-funded R&D centers.
