More than one hundred people participated in the master talk “Neuroinflammation: A central paradigm in the search for a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease”, given last Friday, November 4, at the House of Culture of Coyhaique, by the prominent Dr. Ricardo Maccioni Baraona, who visited the Aysén region in recent days, invited by Senator David Sandoval Plaza.
Aysen.- The activity managed to bring together representatives of organizations for older adults from Coyhaique, authorities and students, among others, who in this way were able to learn about the work that Dr. Maccioni has been developing during his years of research on the subject, how the disease occurs, how it affects the quality of life of individuals and their families, and how the search for treatment is being approached.
In this regard, the scientist born and raised in the Aysén region, expressed that it was “a remarkable experience, human and emotional as well, in the sense that I am talking about what I have done during several years of research”, which has allowed us to seek solutions “for this painful disease, which is Alzheimer’s”.
Maccioni said that the idea is also to transmit “a dose of optimism, of hope to people, that Alzheimer’s is not something terminal and that we can control and prevent it in time”, also sending a message to today’s students and young people, to that they are not discouraged, that they have the capacity for resilience and think big.
For his part, the manager of the visit, Senator David Sandoval, said he was pleased “to have brought as a special guest an Aysen native who today is at the forefront of research, regarding those affectations that older people have and a one of them is Alzheimer’s, a disease that generates a radical change in the context of families”.
Along with valuing the day, the parliamentarian emphasized the need to “create all the conditions for older adults to develop their lives in the best possible way. And Mr. Ricardo Maccioni, we trust that he will find this investigation and hopefully conclude with a good quality of life for our elders”.
Meanwhile, Mr. Baldemar Carrasco, former professor of Dr. Maccioni in his time at the Liceo San Felipe Benicio, valued the opportunity to talk with him after so many years. “It was a pleasant moment (…) He was my student, I had not seen him for a long time and we had been trying to bring him for years,” he said, also highlighting “the contribution he is making.”
At the end of the day, recognition was given to Dr. Maccioni by Senator David Sandoval, the rector of the University of Aysén, Natacha Pino, and Mayor Marcelo Santana, on behalf of the Regional Association of Municipalities (Aremu).
