Four fantastic vintages of the Torres Family – Diario Judío México

The history of Torres wines dates back to 1870, when the family founded its winery in Villafranca del Penedès. Since then, each generation has transmitted to the next the secrets of making great wines, as well as respect for the terroir, love for its traditions and the incorporation of new technologies. It also has a presence in the main Spanish wine regions that are Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Rías Baixas, as well as in Chile and California.

Due to its long history, it is a member of the Primum Familiae Vini, an association that integrates twelve of the most prestigious centuries-old wine-making families in Europe. The fifth generation of this great family has focused on singular vineyards and historic estates, on regenerative viticulture and on the recovery of ancestral varieties.

Recently, it has been chosen again by Drinks International as the most admired and beloved wine brand in the world, and to celebrate it presents us with four top-level vintages: Milmanda 2019, Mas La Plana 2018, Grans Muralles 2018 and Perpetual 2018.

Milmanda 2019 takes its name from a route of medieval castles to give shelter to Christians in times of reconquest. It is at the foot of this castle that the Torres Family grows the Chardonnay variety with which it is made. Its very particular flavor is obtained after aging for 4 to 6 months in 50% new French oak barrels, with subsequent aging in tanks for 10 months; To this is added that the grapes with which it is made grew during a fairly dry winter with normal temperatures, and with a rainier and cooler spring.

Mas La Plana 2018 was born in 1970 under the name of ‘Gran Coronas Black Label’ and soon gained international recognition by beating the best French wines at the Paris Wine Olympics in 1979, in a blind tasting organized by the magazine Gault & Millau. Initially it incorporated small amounts of Tempranillo, but the main variety was Cabernet Sauvignon, and since 1978 it is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, with grapes that are cut entirely by hand and only the best are selected.

Grans Muralles 2018 refers to the walls that protected the Poblet monastery from wars and mercenaries. Its delicious personality is derived from the slate soils and the Garnacha, Cariñena, Querol, Monastrell and Garró varieties with which it is made. After a century of the phylloxera plague, Familia Torres managed to recover extinct autochthonous varieties, such as Garró and Querol, using modern viticulture techniques, so the spirit of this wine reflects centuries of viticultural tradition. In its production, aging varies according to the characteristics of each variety, with an average of 18 months in French oak barrels, so Grans Muralles is the result of a rigorous selection of the best wines.

Perpetual 2018 is a wine that is born from time and the earth, from old Garnacha and Cariñena vines between 80 and 100 years old, planted on steep slate slopes, which are the essence of this wine of great concentration and personality. The plots belong to wine growers in the area, located in several Priorat municipalities, on which an exhaustive follow-up is carried out to guarantee the maximum quality of the grapes, in addition to maintaining the uniqueness of each vineyard by processing each one separately. The lots. Perpetual is a tribute to the Priorat aged wine, an intense wine with character, born to beat time.
