MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, one of the most iconic figures in the fight against apartheid in South Africa and 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner, has died at the age of 90 in Cape Town, the television channel reported. news24.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called Tutu’s death “another chapter of mourning in our nation’s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans who have left us a liberated South Africa.”

Born on October 7, 1931, Desmond Tutu was Bishop of Johannesburg and Secretary General of the South African Council of Churches.

In 1984, Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for his role as a unifying leader in the non-violent campaign to solve the apartheid problem in South Africa.”

The extensive media coverage of Tutu’s Nobel Peace Prize made him an icon in the fight against oppression and paved the way for a tougher sanctions policy against the South African regime in the 1980s.
