Víctor Manuel Villalobos Arámbula, Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development at the federal level, mentioned that the war against pests is an increase in the doses or applications of insecticides, all these chemical compounds that cause is, in the first instance, the generation of compounds and increased pollution.
“The need to continue allocating economic resources each agricultural cycle to control endless pests is leading us to cost increases and the profit margin is very limited, so these factors lead us to explore alternatives that allow us to change that route. that we recognize today is running out,” he said.
Villalobos Arámbula reported that, with this pilot program, they are already working with 24,000 hectares that are being served with this strategy, of which approximately 6,000 correspond to Sinaloa, looking for a way to continue producing food for the country, but taking care of the environment. ambient.
It is estimated that, internationally, around 40 percent of crops are being lost due to pests, however, Mexico is exempt, since its agricultural methods have been changing on the positive side, seeking to innovate to remain a country food leader.
“We have 24,000 hectares already incorporated in some way with the control scheme… this biotechnological innovation adds to the comprehensive pest management strategy, because it does not come to replace what we have done, it comes to make the practice that is carried out more efficient. in the field, with a reduction in both economic and environmental costs,” he said.
For his part, the local deputy, Serapio Vargas, pointed out that producing food must go hand in hand with caring for the planet and Mexico, but especially Sinaloa, are at the ideal time to do so, since everything can go hand in hand without the need for harm.
Mexico remains the leader in corn production
The 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Frances Arnold, said that Mexico is recognized worldwide as a leader in corn production and sustainable agriculture, which is why it represented the best experimental field to test the technology, with the support of Mexican scientists from various centers. such as the International Center for the Improvement of Maize and Wheat, the National Institute of Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock Research; and with the experience in pest control of technicians from the National Service of Health, Safety and Food Quality.
Also, he added, a low-cost “perfume” was developed, for the benefit of plants, nature and producers, thanks to the notable reduction in the use of pesticides in corn fields. This technology has been successfully applied to high-value crops such as apples and grapes, but it was not initially thought to be useful for corn, he noted.
