This year, the international literary efforts of authors who stood out in various awards for their originality, dedication and commitment were awarded.
1. Nobel Prize in Literature 2021: Abdulrazak Gurnah (TANZANIA)
The Tanzanian-born novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah won the 2021 Nobel Prize for Literature. He has published a dozen novels in addition to storybooks, and is best known for his novel “Paradise” (“Paradise”) from 1984. Gurnah is the first black African author to receive the highest award in literature since Soyinka in 1986.

2. Miguel de Cervantes Prize for Literature 2021: Cristina Peri Rossi (URUGUAY)
Cristina Peri Rossi, is the winner of the Miguel de Cervantes Prize for Literature 2021, is known for her realistic stories, some of them compiled in the collection “The abandoned museums” of 1968, her translations and her political activism, which led her to be censored during the military dictatorship that took power in Uruguay between 1973 and 1985.

3. Booker Award: Damon Galgut (SOUTH AFRICA)
Damon Galgut won the prestigious Booker Prize for fiction for his novel “The Promise.” It was the third time that Galgut was a finalist for the award.. The jury rated her latest book as an impressive display of her expertise. Although he was the favorite, Galgut said he was “surprised” to win.

4. IV Mario Vargas Llosa Biennial Novel Prize: Juan Gabriel Vásquez (COLOMBIA)
The Colombian writer Juan Gabriel Vásquez, was the winner of the IV Mario Vargas Llosa Biennial Novel Prize, for his work ‘Look back ‘. The narrator confessed that this is an especially important award for him, for the place that Vargas Llosa’s work occupies in his literary vocation and not only for his novels, “but for a certain way of being a writer, of assuming the literary profession.” .

5. Princess of Asturias Award for Literature 2021: Emmanuel Carrère (PARIS)
Emmanuel Carrère received the 2021 Princess of Asturias Award for Literature this year. The French writer was recognized because “his books contribute to unmasking the human condition and relentlessly dissect reality”, according to the Princess of Asturias jury.

6. Goncourt Prize of 2021: Mohamed Mbougar Sarr (SENEGAL)
The writer Mohamed Mbougar Sarr, was awarded the Goncourt Prize of 2021, for his novel La Plus Secrète Mémoire des hommes (The most secret memory of men). The jury’s decision was surprising not only because of the author’s nationality, but also because of his age, since it had never been awarded to a writer under 40 years of age.
7. Franz Kafka Novel Prize 2021: Ricardo Alberto Pérez (CUBA)
Ricardo Alberto Pérez, won the Franz Kafka Novel Prize for his work ‘Arachnids’. Alberto Pérez, receives this recognition “for the quality of his writing,” said the jury.
