MUSA Awards presents its 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award with Los Jaivas mural in Quinta Vergara

The MUSA Awards, the music that inspires us, will celebrate its second edition on Thursday, December 2. On that day, the winners of the voting that is being carried out will be announced –until November 30– on www.premiosmusa.cl, as well as the long-awaited tribute to Lifetime Achievement Award 2021.

The Lifetime Achievement Award of MUSA Awards 2021 is awarded to an artist or band whose work has reached an outstanding path in the national history of music and this year, it will be presented to The jaivas, the Chilean group founded by the brothers Eduardo, Claudio and Gabriel Parra, Eduardo «Gato» Alquinta and Mario Mutis in 1963, in Viña del Mar.

The recognition considers a special tribute on the day of the MUSA Awards ceremony, as well as a mural specially created to immortalize the protagonists of this band.

Artistic context

Created by the Chilean illustrator Fab Ciraolo and his team, The MUSA Awards mural dedicated to Los Jaivas is located in the Patio Las Columnas, of the Vergara Palace, in Viña del Mar. The location was strategically chosen to commemorate the city of origin of Los Jaivas and also to commemorate the musical relationship that embraces Quinta Vergara by the International Festival of Viña’s Song.

The mural was presented this Thursday, November 25, in the Patio Las Columnas, in the company of the Mayor Macarena Ripamonti, the Executive Director of Iberoamericana Radio Chile (IARC), Ricardo Berdicheski, the Director of MUSA Awards, Martina Orrego, and the directors of the Iberoamericana Radio Chile radios.

In the words of Fab Ciraolo: “The mural shows the members of Los Jaivas with pop touches within an abstract collage. Its predominant colors are red and blue and as a whole, it symbolizes the strength and freedom of this band with an imprint that manages to vibrate before the eyes of the spectator.”.

As it did?

The national artist used his personal water-based enamel technique to paint the 18-meter-long x 2-meter-high wall, which took just four days to complete.

“It is a visual tour with a lot of movement that gives each member their space and importance, but at the same time functions as the same work”adds Ciraolo.

In the middle of this year, MUSA Awards also presented PODCAST MUSA: Los Jaivas 40 years from “Heights of Machu Picchu”, a podcast dedicated to immortalizing the history of the album “Alturas de Machu Picchu” (1981), inspired by the homonymous work of Pablo Neruda –part of the “Canto General” from 1950–.

The work presents the conversation between Mario Mutis, Eduardo, Claudio and Juanita Parra, remembering the moment of recording of this album and its subsequent presentation in the mountains of Machu Picchu, broadcast on television and radio in an unpublished collaboration between Chile and Peru. Said presentation also featured an introduction by the Peruvian writer and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, Mario Vargas Llosa.

The band that comes from the mountain range to the sea

The Chilean group was formed by the brothers Eduardo, Claudio and Gabriel Parra, Eduardo «Gato» Alquinta and Mario Mutis in 1963, in Viña del Mar.

His work is characterized by uniting rock and electric guitars with the roots of the Latin American folk sound, by its relationship with native cultures and by creating music for all types of audiences with a message of peace and brotherhood for more than 50 years of form. uninterrupted.

Their connection with the South American landscape has taken them to such interesting places as Patagonia, the ruins of Machu Picchu, Antarctica, Easter Island and the volcanoes in the Andes Mountains.

As well as outstanding international concerts in theaters such as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Olympia in Paris and the Shaftesbury Hall in London, among many others.

With more than 25 albums and recognitions that include the National Culture Award (1963), the National Music Award (2004) and the Pablo Neruda Artistic and Cultural Merit Award (2003), Los Jaivas have also dedicated themselves to musicalizing the works of the Nobel Prize, Pablo Neruda (“Heights of Machu Picchu”), Violeta Parra and Osvaldo Rodríguez.

Currently its members are: Juanita Parra on drums; Claudio Parra at the piano; Mario Mutis on vocals and bass; Carlos Cabezas González as multi-instrumentalist and vocalist; Francisco Bosco, player of the saxophone and other wind instruments; and guitarist Alan Reale.

The MUSA 2021 Awards will take place on Thursday, December 2 at the Municipal Theater of Las Condes. It will start at 9:00 p.m. and can be seen as a live broadcast on www.premiosmusa.cl and by the FM signals and digital platforms of the 10 radios of Iberoamericana Radio Chile: Imagine, Concert, Radioactiva, Rock & Pop, Future, ADN, FMDOS, Pudahuel, Corazón and LOS40.

MUSA Awards is a popular voting award that seeks to choose and recognize the best musical releases by Chilean and international artists of the last year. Its organization depends on Iberoamericana Radio Chile (IARC) and is promoted by the 10 radio stations of this conglomerate. Its first edition took place on December 4, 2020, with the aim of rewarding new local launches in the first year of the pandemic.
