Muslim Council of Elders 2022 issues report on its achievements in 2022

ABU DHABi, 25th December, 2022 (WAM) — The Muslim Council of Elders highlighted its efforts to promote human brotherhood in a report reviewing the achievements made during 2022.

The report shed light on the ‘Document on Human Brotherhood’ which was co-signed in 2019 by His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders together with His Holiness the Pope. Francis of the Catholic Church in Abu Dhabi. In this regard, the report explained how the world has continued to greet the historic Document ever since.

“Following the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the anniversary of the signing of the Document (February 4) as the ‘International Day of Human Fraternity’, many national states and international leaders adopted it as a letter to disseminate peace worldwide to accompany several universities around the world applying the values ​​of human brotherhood in their study plans.

-The President of East Timor adopts the Document on Human Fraternity as a national charter along with religious leaders who consider it a path to peace

-Bahrain Dialogue Forum is a new chapter for Human Fraternity -Cartoon artists celebrate the most important charter in modern history

-On May 19, 2022, the President of East Timor and Nobel Peace Prize winner, José Ramos-Horta, announced that the East Timorese parliament adopted the Document as a national charter to be implemented in the school curriculum.

-Ramos-Horta said during his presidential inauguration attended by the Secretary General of the Council, Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam: “As president, I have signed a declaration in which I commit myself to work with our national authorities in the education system, and also with the Catholic Church and other religious groups, to adopt the teachings and values ​​of the Document on Human Fraternity as part of our national school curriculum”.

-On September 25, 2022, more than 108 delegates adopted the Document on Human Fraternity at the 7th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in the Kazakhstani capital, Nur-Sultan. Under the motto “The role of the leaders of world and traditional religions in the spiritual and social development of humanity in the post-pandemic period”, the event was attended by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, as well as His Eminence, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and President of the Muslim Council of Elders and His Holiness Pope Francis, Pontiff of the Catholic Church.

– Likewise, several universities promoted and applied the values ​​of the Document on Human Fraternity within their educational curricula. These include students from Al-Azhar University and academies, as well as students in the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Italy, bringing the total number of students to 1.5 million.

-During the ‘Building Interfaith Solidarity’ conference held at Georgetown University in September 2022, Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia highlighted the university’s introductory program to the Document on Human Fraternity and Positive Impact it has had on students and dialogue on campus. .

-In November 2022, the Document was always present at the “Bahrain Dialogue Forum: East and West for Human Coexistence”, attended by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, as well as His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders and His Holiness Pope Francis, Pontiff of the Catholic Church, together with more than 200 religious leaders together with leading academic and of the media around the world.

-Similarly, the participants in the Al-Azhar Cartoon Gathering that took place in July 2022 showed great interest in the Document and its values. The event had more than 400 participants from 31 countries that largely focused on humanitarian issues, coexistence, dialogue, peace and human fraternity.

-The Document was also the subject of discussion of a doctoral thesis in the Department of Asian Studies of the University of Zagazig in Egypt. Entitled ‘The Document on Human Brotherhood and its Impact on Muslims in Asia: Rohingya and Uyghurs as Examples’, the thesis was presented by researcher Mayada Tharwat and confirmed the important role of the two largest religious institutions in achieving the Document on Human Fraternity while also praising the prominent role of the United Arab Emirates and its President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in supporting the Historic Document.”
