Barcelona will inaugurate its third largest library this Saturday, May 28. It’s about the Gabriel Garcia Marquez Librarywhich will be the headquarters of the Sant Martí district and will be the only one in the city to include a radio studio.

The space began work in 2019 – four years late – and the initial construction plan has been extended with new sections. The library building has a usable area of 3,318 square meters with a labor cost of €11,745,311. Regarding the useful file area, it has 135 square meters and will generate 15 jobs.

Specifically, it is found in the number 219 Treball Street and draws attention to his glass walls and unique decoration –with hammocks and rugs– that differs from the rest of the city’s facilities.

Its area of ​​direct affluence includes the neighborhoods of Sant Martí and la Verneda i la Pau, with an approximate population of 55,000 inhabitants. will be specialized in latin american literatureand will have a background of about 40,000 documents, 140 reading points and 30 Internet access points. In addition, it differs because it will have a sensory space as well as rooms for group activities.

The facade overlooks the streets of Concili de Trento and Treball. At the back, it borders on the plot of the building exempt from the National Police. The new facility is divided into three main spaces: two of them parallel to the rear building of the National Police –from which it is 16 meters apart– with a perimeter patio and the third, which unites the previous ones, which is a large chamfer that opens to the corner.

OPENING

For your opening the library has organized shows, music and dance throughout the day. Starting at 10:00 am, the performances of the giants, devils, trabucaires and other neighborhood entities will begin. At 11:00 am, meanwhile, it will be the turn of the little ones with the family show by Pep Callau i els Pepsicolen.

The official opening ceremony will be held at 12:00 p.m. and in the afternoon, between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., there will be all kinds of musical performances featuring Latin American dances. In addition, there will be readings by authors and authors of Latin America.

LATIN AMERICAN LITERATURE

In honor to Gabriel Garcia Marquezthe Colombian writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982 and which gives its name to the facility, the library will be specialized in Latin American literature. García Márquez is one of the most important authors of the I’m still XX and his most recognized work is One hundred years of solitudeof which it is estimated that more than 30 million copies –it is translated in 49 languages–.

The space embraces the main works of narrators, poets and playwrights of Latin Americaboth classic and contemporary. Barcelona has a “long and fruitful” relationship with Latin American writers, especially since the main writers of the Boom settled down – between the mid-1960s and 1970s – following the figure of the literary reference Carme Balcells.

IRRADICATION OF CULTURE

In addition to highlighting the bibliographic collection of Latin America, the library wants to be a “center of irradiation of its culture” through dissemination and promotion activities “thanks to the close relationship it has Libraries of Barcelona with Casa Amèrica Catalunya.

FRANCISCO IBÁÑEZ: TRIBUTE TO THE COMIC

In the area of comic On the first floor, tribute will be paid to Francisco Ibáñez, a comic artist from Sant Martí. there will be until 500 titles –at first– with stories of the renowned artist, among which those of his most emblematic protagonists stand out: Mortadelo and FilemonRompetechos, Botones Sacarino or the residents of 13 Rue del Percebe.
