For nine editions, the award has been the platform to recognize excellence and quality journalistic coverage of health in Latin America. And now that its tenth edition is celebrated —in the midst of the challenges demanded by the dynamism of journalism— this milestone brings with it a renewal to consolidate ourselves as a community that integrates other views and approaches, seeking to expand our accompaniment and impact on journalists from the region, from the exchange of experiences.
To start this tenth year, we open the inscriptions to the contest from this March 28 to June 27, 2022. We invite you to be part of this new chapter by applying for your journalistic work.
Starting this year, we are expanding the themes of the contest to address not only health and science journalism, but also coverage that addresses these issues based on their economic, political and social impact, and from human, inclusive and innovative.
The winners of the Roche Award in each category of the tenth edition will be announced in November through a virtual award ceremony, in which finalists, organizers, juries and our entire community will gather to highlight the best of Latin American journalism.
This is a joint effort between Roche Latin America and the Technical Secretariat of the Gabo Foundation through which, so far, we have honored 50 journalists or teams of journalists from the region, including category winners and honorable mentions, and we have created a community of about 4 thousand professionals.
These are the categories
This year, you can apply for the Roche Award if your journalistic work falls into one of these three categories: Sound Journalism, Digital Journalism and Daily Coverage.
In Sound Journalism we will reward the work with the best sound language produced and broadcast on radio programs by stations, legally constituted networks or on digital platforms in any country in Latin America.
In Digital Journalism, the award will go to the best work produced and published in digital media and environments of all kinds and from any country in the region.
In Daily Coverage, the work that best complies as the benchmark for in-depth journalistic coverage, explanation and follow-up of issues that arise from the daily situation will be chosen.
An edition for expansion
“The one in 2022 will be a special edition of the Roche Award in which we are committed to meeting again and offering colleagues from the region more and better opportunities to expand a community committed to journalism that comprehensively looks at health in the region, based on their relationship with fields such as economics, politics, science, technology and, most importantly, how all this is reflected in people’s lives, and therefore, reminds us of the value of journalism as a public service”, says Miguel Montes Camacho, director of the Gabo Foundation Journalism Workshop.
Since its first edition, the Roche Award has been framed not only by the categories in competition, but also by six themes. This year, we updated the list to expand the reach of health journalism, starting with the news agenda in Latin America.
For his part, Fernando Giannoni, Leader of Public Affairs and Communications at Roche Latin America, shared that “The tenth edition of the Roche Prize for Journalism is an opportunity to continue recognizing the talent, dedication and investigative work of journalists who have given light to the most relevant issues in science and health in Latin America. In this edition, the award will not only present a new image, but also expand its scope to new audiences and topics, representing Roche’s renewed commitment to continue promoting excellence and rigor in the journalistic exercise, by disseminating stories from different prospects. This is an invaluable effort that makes visible the challenges and solutions to improve health, with the potential to drive changes that benefit the whole of society.”
When applying to the contest you must take into account this list of topics, since the journalistic work must be focused on at least one of these:
- Challenges facing health care.
- Non-communicable and low-prevalence diseases.
- Innovations for health care.
- Policy reforms to improve health care.
- Woman and health.
- Community actions for health.

For 10 years, the Roche Award has allowed us to present the best of health journalism in Latin America through the works submitted. These must have been originally broadcast in Spanish and Portuguese, addressing health issues according to the established themes.
On this occasion, the works to be registered must have been broadcast or published for the first time between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021.
There is only one way to apply for the tenth edition of the Roche Award and it is through the website www.premiorochedeperiodismo.com, entering the application platform and filling in all the fields available for the registration process.
In ten years of existence we have highlighted the individual work of journalists from the region, but also the work of work teams, which include graphic designers, videographers, photojournalists, editors, among others. These collaborations are increasingly common in applications, with stories made even transnationally, by different media. This is why you must be clear that when you register you can include an individual and a collective work, but not without first reviewing the Roche Award Bases.
After the closing of the call, on June 27, 2022, we will start the evaluation process, following three rounds: a technical round, one for the selection of the prejurors, and a last one with the juries of each category and advisors for the mention of special honor.
Other recognitions
This year we will once again highlight the work that best develops the solutions journalism approach through an honorable mention (delivered for the first time in 2020), which seeks to promote the production of journalistic stories that investigate, narrate and explain in depth the responses that institutions, communities and people are developing in the face of health challenges, problems and gaps in Latin America.
In addition, in each category this year we will give an honorable mention to the work with the best approach in the theme Challenges in healthcare. The journalistic pieces registered with this theme as the main one will be nominated for recognition by default.
For winners, finalists and honorable mentions
For the second time, the winner of each category (in the case of a collective work, the team must choose a delegate) will receive a scholarship of up to $5,000 dollars (less bank commissions) for academic training in courses, specializations or master’s degrees. In addition, he will receive a commemorative trophy and a diploma.
The finalists in each of the categories in competition in the tenth edition will receive a medal and a diploma. The authors who receive honorable mentions will obtain a diploma.
