The auditorium of the Palace of Exhibitions and Congresses of Seville hosts this Monday morning, starting at 12:30 p.m., the traditional institutional act of delivery of the Medals of the City, on the occasion of May 30, the day of San Fernando , patron saint of the Andalusian capital.
The list of distinctions, let’s remember, includes the symbolic appointment of the “Ukrainian People” as ‘Adopted Son’ of the city of Seville, as well as the actress María Galiana and the bailaora Manuela Carrasco as his favorite daughters.
With the appointment of ‘Adopted Son’, Ukraine is to be recognized “for its struggle and resistance against the invasion by Russia, as an expression of the support and solidarity of the people of Seville, and finally, in recognition of the work of entities, associations and citizens in general dedicated to social and humanitarian aid”.
Regarding the favorite daughters, María Galiana Medina, born in Triana, graduated in Philosophy and Letters, specializing in History, and worked as a History and Art History teacher in different institutes. In 1999, she starred in Benito Zambrano’s Solas, “with a memorable role in a magnificent film with an Andalusian accent” that earned her the Goya Award for best supporting actress.
The actress has won the affection of the public for years thanks to her role in the television series ‘Cuéntame qué pasa’, and in the series ‘La Mari’. During this time she has been able to combine her performances on screen with theater.
Manuela Carrasco Salazar, also Seville’s ‘Favorite Daughter’, is a flamenco dancer and artist. She was born in Triana into a family of artists. She debuted when she was a girl and at just 18 years old she was already recognized as one of the greats, sharing the stage with names as distinguished as Matilde Coral, Farruco or Rafael El Negro. In 1974 the Pastora Imperio Award consecrates her as a dance teacher, heir to tradition and possessor of her own style.
He has brought flamenco art and its imprint to auditoriums and theaters around the world and has performed with renowned filmmakers such as Carlos Saura. He is National Dance Award, Medal of Andalusia and Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts.
CITY MEDALS
As for the medals, for his career in promoting human values and his social work for the benefit of the community and the most needy groups, the city medals are awarded to Pablo Noguera Aledo, brother Pablo, a member of the Congregation Franciscan of the White Cross. He has served as the personal secretary of Cardinal Carlos Amigo Vallejo, recently deceased, for much of his life, of which almost three decades he has done so permanently in Seville.
On the other hand, to the Asociación Familiar la Oliva (AFO), for its work since 1972 in favor of the creation and conservation of infrastructures in the Barrio de la Oliva, for the support it has always given to the residents of the neighborhood; the Order of the Discalced Carmelites of Santo Ángel from the historic Santo Ángel Convent in Seville, which has already served the city for 435 years; Gregorio Medina Blanco, for a successful professional career of 55 years as a gynecologist and as a professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics and Amparo Díaz Ramos, a lawyer who has spent two decades assisting victims of sexist violence.
Secondly, for her career in promoting culture, art and her contribution to spreading the name of Seville, the medals are awarded to Teresa Duclós López, a member of the Andalusian realistic school, for her artistic quality and ability to capture in his art the light and harmony of Seville; Francisco Correal Naranjo, Paquiño, a journalist who has worked for Diario 16, El País and the Grupo Joly, where he continues to collaborate, always with his own style and always from his dual passion for football and literature; Víctor Pérez Escolano, professor emeritus at the University of Seville, an international reference in urban planning, architect and profound connoisseur of the history of contemporary architecture and especially of Spain and Seville.
Ignacio Fernández Vial, technical naval engineer, researcher, historian and builder of historic ships and director of his great voyages, is also recognized, as he has dedicated a large part of his life to studying and disseminating the feat of the First Round the World and the role from Seville in the same; and Joaquín Sánchez Rodríguez, Real Betis Balompié footballer, the player who has worn the green and white shirt the most times and international with the Spanish team on 51 occasions.
Likewise, they have been distinguished in this facet Antonio Gómez de los Reyes, Antonio Canales, reference teacher and style for several generations of dance and flamenco dance; Francisco Carrera Iglesias, Paquili, embroidery craftsman with 40 years of work in his craft workshop, for the unique creations that come out of his craft workshop and for his continuous struggle so that the art of the brotherhood is equal in every way to the rest of the arts; and María del Pilar del Río Sánchez, a Portuguese of second nationality and for poetic reasons, since she is a journalist and translator and president of the José Saramago Foundation, a Nobel Prize winner with whom she shared life, and whom she knew how to teach to love Seville.
ENTREPRENEURIAL AND INNOVATIVE WORK
Thirdly, in recognition of its entrepreneurial, innovative and professional work, medals are awarded to Gaesco, the Association of Builders and Promoters of Seville, for its important institutional work, carrying out numerous collaboration agreements in the university, business and with public agents, especially with the Seville City Council; Rusvel, a family business founded in Seville in 1921 by Salvador Rus López, which celebrated its centenary last year at the Higher School of Hospitality in Seville; and José María Fernández-Capitán, an archetypal example of a self-made businessman, owner of an international group specializing in organized catering that has five of its own brands –100 Montaditos, TGB Burger, Cervecería la Sureña, Panther and Pepe Taco–, 750 restaurants and presence in 13 countries.
Fourth, for his teaching, educational and research work, the medals are awarded to Carlos Martínez Shaw, historian, professor emeritus specializing in Modern History and member of the Royal Academy of History, as he is one of the main promoters of history maritime of the Old Regime in Spain; and to Asunción Fernández Camacho, who since 1987 has been producing science at the Materials Science Institute of Seville, Joint Center CSIC University of Seville, with research that has been focusing on the study of materials with grain sizes smaller than 50 nanomaterials.
In this facet, the work of Lola Pons Rodríguez, professor in the Department of Spanish Language, Linguistics and Theory of Literature at the University of Seville, is also recognized.
He currently represents the Seville City Council in the Academic Commission for the Commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Elio Antonio de Nebrija and is one of the most influential, read and heard voices in Spanish philology. She also to Amparo Graciani García, professor of Architectural Constructions at the US and doctor in Art History.
Together with them, the Joint Research Center of the EU, Joint Research Center (JRC) -the largest research center in the EU– is recognized in support of its policies from Seville; and Cristina José Cruces Roldán, Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Seville, as she is one of the first expert academics in flamenco and a student of its contexts, its development and biographer of some of its most outstanding personalities.
