Mexico City. With a call to eradicate all gender violence, educational, health, justice, ecclesial institutions, international organizations, political parties and legislators joined the demand to eliminate all violence against women, adolescents and girls, a task that “cannot wait plus”.

The United Nations (UN) said in a statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls, that “we will not be able to recover from the crisis generated by Covid-19 or build egalitarian societies, if more half of humanity continues to suffer the devastating consequences of another pandemic: that of violence against them ”.

The International Labor Organization joined the call from civil organizations and unions for Mexico to adopt Convention 190, regarding violence and harassment. He warned that the health and economic crisis “have exacerbated vulnerabilities, inequalities and gender violence,” for which he urged the country to take effective action to build a future free of violence and harassment.

The elimination of violence against women “must be a permanent conviction,” said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, opening a discussion with Latin American winners of the Nobel Peace Prize. “What we can achieve in the short term, if we propose it, is to eliminate violence against women, that must be a permanent conviction,” he stated before personalities such as Adolfo Pérez Esquivel (winner in 1980), Óscar Arias Sánchez (1987) and Edmundo de Alba Alcaraz (2007).

The rector of the UNAM, Enrique Graue, affirmed that “violence against women and gender-motivated inequality are two of the most serious and urgent contemporary problems.” This, in the context of an act in which Latin American university authorities signed a declaration of “zero tolerance” to gender violence.

Meanwhile, during the first International Congress on University Justice: Gender and Human Rights, it was reported that between August 2020 and August 2021, the UNAM Human Rights Defender has received 245 complaints associated with some type of gender violence.

The call to eradicate all forms of violence against women was also joined by the Ibero-American and Jesuit Universities of Guadalajara, which demanded to guarantee access to justice and the right to a life free from aggression.

For his part, the general director of the National Polytechnic Institute, Arturo Reyes, announced the creation of the Center for Comprehensive Attention to Victims of Gender Violence.

The Ministry of Health announced that it once again joins the actions for the elimination of violence against women and joins the UN Women global campaign: “16 days of activism against gender violence”, from November 25 to 10 from December.

The president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, Arturo Zaldívar, assured that the acts to commemorate this day are important “yes and only yes, from here we can generate awareness and changes in society.
