The deadline for submitting applications for the next Nobel Peace Prize 2022 closed on January 31; just this first of February some candidates were revealed.
Pope Francis; Myanmar activists; the opposition leader in Belarus, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya; as well as the outstanding figures of environmentalism, Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough, are some of the names that appear on the list of candidates for the prize Peace Nobel 2022.
The deadline for submitting applications for the next Peace Nobel was closed on January 31, and just this first of February some candidates from the list that the Norwegian Nobel Committee will keep secret for at least 50 years.
Members of Parliament from around the world to former winners can nominate a name to be awarded the Peace Nobel. Despite being a strictly confidential list, some nominators, including Norwegian legislators, choose to reveal to their candidates.
Myanmar activists nominated for 2022 Nobel Peace Prize
A Norwegian deputy announced on Tuesday that he proposed as his candidate the Myanmar National Unity Government formed by opponents of last year’s coup in Burma.
Myanmar has been in a state of violence for a year, when the army, on the grounds of alleged electoral fraud, annulled the elections won by Aung San Suu Kyi’s party (winner of the Peace Nobel in 1991) and overthrew his government.
Outstanding environmentalists are considered for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize
95-year-old British environmentalist David Attenborough was nominated for the Peace Nobel 2022 together with the Intergovernmental Science and Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
Attenborough and IPBES were recognized with this nomination for “their efforts to inform and protect the Earth’s natural diversity, a prerequisite for sustainable and peaceful societies,” said nominator Une Bastholm, leader of the Norwegian Green Party.
Similarly, Greta Thunberg and her rise from teen activist to global climate leader has made her a frequent Nobel nominee in recent years. East 2022 was no exception and the Swedish appears on the list of candidates.
Other candidates for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize
The World Health Organization (WHO) appears again as one of the candidates to the Peace Nobel. Its efforts to contain the Covid-19 pandemic in the world have made the organization worthy of this nomination.
Belarusian opposition leader in exile Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was nominated for the second year in a row for her “courageous, tireless and peaceful work” for democracy and freedom in her home country, MP Haarek Elvenes said.
Pope Francis also appears as one of the candidates thanks to “his actions to solve the climate crisis, as well as his work towards peace and reconciliation,” said Dag Inge Ulstein, a former international development minister.
The winner of the award Peace Nobel from 2022 will be announced in October by the Norwegian Committee.
