Dimitri muratov, founder and editor-in-chief of the principal Russian independent newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, on Friday dedicated his Nobel Peace Prize to his medium and his six journalists and collaborators who have been assassinated since 2000.

Muratov explained that he was unable to answer the phone when he received the call from Nobel Committee because he was working and he hadn’t had time to read the ad copy yet.

The newspaper specified that a part of the sum received for the award will be allocated to a charity fund that helps children with rare diseases. This organization, Krug Dobra (The Circle of Kindness) was founded in January at the initiative of Vladimir Putin.

Muratov, 59 years old, he is one of the founders and editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, and for decades he has defended freedom of expression in Russia.

The prize, consisting of a diploma, a gold medal and a check from 10 million crowns (980 thousand euros), which is usually delivered on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel (1833-1896).

The newspaper he runs Muratov it is published in print on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in Moscow, various regions of Russia and various countries, while the English articles on the website are published in a weekly bulletin.

Muratov, born 59 years ago in Samara, edited the newspaper between 1995 and 2017. The Committee to Protect Journalists has listed the daily Novaya Gazeta as the only critical newspaper in Russia.

On January 18, 2010, the newspaper received the order of the Legion of Honor, the highest decoration in France, in the rank of Knight and on May 29, 2010 he obtained the Four Freedoms Award for Freedom of Expression in Middelburg.

The work of the Russian journalist has favored pressure on the government of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and has served to give voice to minority parties in the country. He has also made known the situation in Chechnya and the north of Caucasus.

The last time the Peace Nobel to a journalist it was in 1935. On that occasion the German was awarded Carl von Ossietzky for their reporting on a rearmament program that Germany kept secret between the two world wars.
