Since the 1950s, the Palme d’Or celebrates each year the best film of the official selection of the Cannes film festivalreplacing the Grand Prize, considered at the time to be the highest honor. 1 – This year, it is set with 100 diamonds

Every year the Palme d’Or consists of a delicate branch of a golden twig with 19 leaflets articulated around a stem at the end in the shape of a heart, a symbol of Chopard. As in 2017 for the celebration of the 70th edition of the Festival, this year it is again adorned with diamonds for the second time. On one of the leaflets, 75 encrusted diamonds symbolize the Festival’s jubilee, while on another, 25 will embody the quarter century of the partnership with Chopard, which began in 1997. Diamonds from suppliers certified by the Responsible Jewelery Council.

2 – It is the only cinema trophy made in ethical gold

Since 2014, the trophy has been imagined in certified ethical gold Fairminedin the program Journey to Sustainable Luxury coordinated by Chopard. To date, it is the only cinema trophy made in ethical gold, respectful of the work of men and the environment.

3 – For the first time, it will rest on a block of pink quartz, replacing the traditional rock crystal

A special edition, special palm! For this edition, another change also sees the light of day for the Palme d’Or, in parallel with being studded with diamonds: like the traditional cushion in rock crystal, this year the Palm rests on a base in pink quartz, the stone of love to symbolize the passion that unites the jewelery house and the world of cinema.

4 – 70 hours are needed to manufacture

To shape the Palme d’Or of the 2022 edition, 6 artisans work for 70 hours in the house’s high jewelry workshops. The result is a trophy 13.5 centimeters high containing 118 grams of ethical gold.

5- In 74 years, only two women have been awarded the Palme d’Or

Since 1998, when the trophy began its collaboration with the house Chopardonly one Palme d’Or was awarded to a woman, the director Julia Ducournau for his movie Titanium in 2021. Previously, only Jane Campion was the first director to receive this distinction for her film The piano lesson in 1993.
