Cannes 2022: David Cronenberg, serial killers, conspiracies… in the race for the Palme d’Or

The official selection of the Cannes Film Festival 2022 was announced on April 14, 2022 by Thierry Fremaux and Pierre Lescure.

This 75th Cannes Film Festival was still full of mysteries before the announcement of the official selection. With the exception of a few persistent and sometimes contradictory rumors (does David Lynch have a new film to present: answer no finally) and two films already confirmed – Top Gun: Maverick and Elvis – we didn’t know much. Surprisingly, the selection was even revealed before the announcement of the president of the jury. Fremaux also specified that the composition of the jury would therefore be announced later (probably next week).

On the other hand, the general delegate of the festival obviously unveiled the opening film. It will be Z (Like Z) by Michel Hazanavicius, remake of the little Japanese zombie pearl Do not cut!. The film has made a name for itself in out-of-competition, where Cannes will also receive Three thousand years waiting for youthe new film by George Miller, seven years later Mad Max: Fury Road as well as November by Cédric Jimenez, back on the Croisette after Bac Nord with a film on the Paris attacks in November in Paris. Even Quentin Dupieux managed to interfere in a midnight session which promises to be delirious with his Smoking makes you cough.

For the competition, we were also expecting big names for this new edition and they will be present. Already, there will be four former winners of the Palme d’Or: the Dardenne brothers, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Cristian Mungiu and Ruben Ôstlund. They will also be accompanied by many names already passed by the festival including David Cronenberg with his film The crimes of the future. The Claire Denis, Arnaud Desplechin and Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi will also be back in competition just like James Gray with Armageddon TimePark Chan-wook with Decision to Leave (investigation film about a murderer) and Kirill Serebrennikov with Tchaikovsky’s wife.

And alongside these prestigious names (where we also find Mario Martone and Jerzy Skolimowski), there will also be five new faces in this competition. In addition to the presence of Kelly Reichardt (the third woman, only, present in competition this year) and Lukas Dhont (the director of Girl), we retain the beautiful selections of Ali Abbasi (Border), Tariq Saleh (Confidential Cairo) and especially Saeed Roustayi, the Iranian director of the super Tehran law.

If we don’t yet know what his film will be about, Leila’s Brothers, we know that Ali Abbasi’s film will follow a murderer who kills prostitutes in the middle of Iran, while that of Tarik Saleh will plunge us into a religious thriller in the middle of Cairo.

Short, a very nice selection in perspective which announces a rather crazy Cannes. A list which could also grow as Frémaux specified (remains to be seen with whom in view of the notorious absences of Ari Aster, Sarah Polley, Koji Fukada or the series of Lars Von Trier). The complete list of all selected films is available below, the festival will take place from May 17 to 28, 2022 in France.
