For the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, Chopard, the Swiss jeweler and official partner who provides the trophy each year, wanted to make an impression. Pink quartz and 100 diamonds set on two branches: this year the Palme is like no other!
“Chopard’s unconditional love for cinema“, this is what was transcribed in the Palme d’or of this 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival through a first specificity a rose quartz base.
This Palme is even more glamorous than usual. I had proposed to Thierry Frémaux to dress him with another look to do something even more unique this year.
Caroline Scheufele, co-president and artistic director of Chopard
For make it unique, it is adorned this year with 100 diamonds: 75 diamonds are set on a folly in homage to the 75th Cannes Film Festival, 25 on another in reference to the 25th participation of Chopard as an official partner.
In total, the Palm is adorned withone carat of diamonds. “It’s hard to touch something that’s perfect. For 25 years, this is only the second time that we have modified it. The first time was for the 20th anniversary, we sprinkled diamonds on it“, details Caroline Scheufele.
Like every year, the Palme was designed by Caroline Scheufele.
On the other hand, specificity for this 25th Palme de Chopard, 70 hours of work were necessary to make this jewel, i.e. 30 hours longer than traditional.
The characteristics of this jewel, on the other hand, do not change:
- 118 grams of ethical gold.
- 13.5x9x9 centimeters.
- 19 leaflets articulated around a stem at the end in the shape of a heart.
Since 2014, the Palme benefits from the international label “Fairmined“, guaranteeing that the yellow gold used is extracted with respect for the environment and social rights of artisanal gold miners.
La Palme rests on a cushion of 1 kg rock crystalcut in the shape of a diamond and always unique: nature never gives birth to two identical crystals.
The first Palme was awarded in 1955 to “Marty” by the American Delbert Mann. Until 1954, the best film won the Grand Prize at the International Film Festival. The award-winning director left with a diploma and a work of art signed by a contemporary artist.
At the time Robert Favre Le Bret launched a call for tenders from jewelers to create a trophy recalling the palm leaf which appears on the coat of arms of the city of Cannes.
But the first Palme d’or is not unanimous: the trophy was abandoned after the 1963 festival. It was finally rehabilitated in 1975 and taken over by the jeweler Chopard in 1998.
A total of 9 trophies will be awarded during the closing ceremony of the Festival: the Prize for Female Interpretation, the Prize for Male Interpretation, the Grand Prize, the Prize for Directing, the Script Prize, the Prize for Jury, the Palme d’Or for Short Film and the Camera d’or. Like the Palme d’Or, they are all made by the Chopard workshops.
In the event of a Palme ex aequo, or a material accident, a spare palm is always provided.
